UPS views Thailand as Asia gateway

United Parcel Service (UPS) plans to promote Thailand as its gateway to Indochina and other Asian countries because of its geography and good infrastructure, its Asia-Pacific head Ken Torok said yesterday.
Just how fast Thailand attains this position will depend on the readiness of its facilities such as those at the new Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
The seven opportunity Asian countries for UPS are China, Japan, Korea, India, Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, he said. Last year the number of packages sent by UPS to Asia grew by an average of 15 per cent from the previous year.
In the global market, excluding Asia, business grew by 50 per cent.

UK NCN Express appoints Danny Mills

Parcel carrier NCN Express has appointed Danny Mills as operations manager. Mills will be responsible for the carrier’s night sort operation, scanning processes, and pick and pack operation. He will also be responsible for developing a new part-automated materials handling systems. Mills was previously hub manager at Hellmanns and Nightfreight.

FedEx Ground Chooses Site for New US Mid-South Distribution Hub

As part of a USD1.8 billion network expansion plan to nearly double average daily hub package volume capacity in North America, FedEx Ground, an operating unit of FedEx Corporation has chosen a 93-acre site in Olive Branch, Miss., as the location for the fourth of nine new package distribution hubs to be constructed over the next six years. The 330,000 square-foot facility, to be located in the DeSoto Distribution Center, will be the second major FedEx Ground sortation center in the Memphis area. When it opens in 2006, the new hub will feature the latest automated material handling technology designed to process 22,500 packages per hour and will have a workforce of approximately 60 full-time and 325 part-time workers and 70 independent contractors.

Qatar Post plans to regulate courier facility

Qatar’s General Postal Corporation plans to regulate the courier facilty offered by various currency exchange houses to deliver demand drafts and other monetary instruments from Qatar to beneficiaries abroad, Saeed Khalaf Al Muraikhi, director of postal operations at the corporation, said.

New Zealand Post and DHL in discussion on joint venture opportunity

New Zealand Post have announced that they are in discussions with the world’s leading express and logistics company, DHL regarding a possible joint venture.

The dialogue relates to New Zealand Post’s courier and logistics business, which include Courier Post, SkyRoad, Pace! and Contract Logistics.

New Zealand Post Chief Executive John Allen said the organisation are looking at opportunities to unlock the full potential of its courier and logistics business and strengthen its position in local and global markets.
