South African Postal Business Unit favours 3% tariff hike

The Postal Business Unit, a division of the SA Postal Services (Sapo), has said it was in favour of the 3 percent general tariff increase for this year despite enormous operational challenges it faced in terms of its licence conditions.

Sapo’s licence conditions prescribe that it provides millions of South Africans, irrespective of their physical location, with a basic postal service that is reliable, affordable and equitable.

DHL’s use of Astar Air Cargo and ABX Air heading for US approval

DHL’s use of Astar Air Cargo and ABX Air to carry freight in North America appears to be headed for Department of Transportation approval, clearing the way for the European express giant to compete head-to-head with FedEx and UPS in the United States. DOT administrative Law Judge Burton Kolko’s recommended decision in the Astar citizenship case leaves little room for DOT decision makers to maneuver. To declare Miami-based Astar as non-U.S. controlled would require an unlikely complete reversal of Kolko’s recommendation and a total rejection of the judge’s reasoning.

New DHL Express center opening in Moscow

DHL Company is opening a new express-center in Moscow in Novinsky Boulevard in February. The fact that the center will be situated near the US Embassy to Russia will allow DHL clients to economize time while sending documents with the aim of getting immigration visas.
According to DHL press-service, the new express-center will be notable both for the range of services rendered and the level of technical equipment.

FedEx plans expansion in China

FedEx, the world’s top express service, is planning to expand its operations in China this year to keep up with the country’s fast-growing opening up process in line with its World Trade Organization commitments. Heading up the FedEx growth engine in China is Eddy Chan, FedEx’s regional vice-president in China and the Mid-Pacific region. Chan says that one of his immediate tasks is to expand the company’s network of branches in China to achieve deeper market penetration. “Our plan is to open 5 to 10 branches in China this year,” Chan says.

SmartMail Services has announced the success of its aggressive growth strategy during the 2003 calendar year. SmartMail acquired two companies, expanded its processing facilities to 17 SmartCenters and broadened its suite of delivery service offerings to include Flats, Catalogs, Bound Printed Matter, Media Mail and Parcels. “The SmartMail team had an outstanding year and accomplished several milestones,” says Matt Vettel, chairman of SmartMail and partner at Great Hill Partners. “By expanding our service offering and continuing our network build out, we met our overall strategic objective of strengthening our value proposition for our customers.”
