Deutsche Post welcomes US judge's decision on DHL and ASTAR

Deutsche Post World Net AG has welcomed the decision of a US federal judge that the cooperation between Post subsidiary DHL and US airline ASTAR Air Cargo is legal.

According to a press release from ASTAR, US Department of Transportation (DOT) administrative law judge Burton Kolko ruled that ASTAR is indeed owned and controlled by US citizens and can continue to operate. Under US law, US certified airlines must be ‘citizens of the United States’.

Blow to UPS and FedEx as Astar is judged to be US-controlled

A federal judge has ruled that Astar Air Cargo is a US-controlled air carrier, dealing a hefty blow to UPS and FedEx which have long argued the airline is owned and operated by the German postal monopoly, Deutsche Post.

The decision, administered by Burton Kolko, an administrative law judge at the Department of Transportation, removes a major hurdle for Deutsche Post as it muscles into the lucrative $47bn US package delivery market.

Astar flies almost exclusively express packages for DHL Worldwide Express, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post.

The decision also signals the near end of a three-year ordeal by FedEx and UPS to prove Astar’s close ties with Deutsche Post violate foreign ownership laws.

Australia Post and Qantas have acquired express road freight operator, Star Track Express, for $750 million.

The companies said the purchase would be made through a 50:50 joint venture and funded from net cash reserves and undrawn credit facilities.

Marie-Christine Lombard to succeed Alan Jones as head of TPG Express division

The Supervisory Board of Mail, Express and Logistics company TPG is pleased to announce that Marie-Christine Lombard (45) has been appointed to head up the Express division as Group Managing Director. She currently is Managing Director of the Express business unit in France. In her new position, Lombard will be responsible for all of TPG’s worldwide Express activities and will become a member of the Board of Management. The appointment of Marie Christine Lombard will take effect per 1 January 2004 and is subject to compliance with statutory requirements. TPG and Alan Jones have amicably agreed that Alan will depart on the 31st of December 2003. Alan joined the company in 1980 and for many years was Managing Director of TNT UK Limited.

Deutsche Post makes good progress with restructuring of Express Services

Deutsche Post, the German postal service, says that it has made good progress with the restructuring of its parcel and express services in Germany and Europe. All of the company’s services in this field are to be combined under the umbrella of DHL Express. This is expected to lead to job cuts, as the company believes that it will be able to carry out the same volume of work with fewer staff. DHL currently employs 90,000 staff in Europe. In particular, staff in administrative functions are expected to be affected by the changes.
