UPS subsidiary helping customers realign delivery routes, save mileage

A small subsidiary of UPS is making a big impact on behalf of its customers through the deployment of computer software that allows exquisitely precise planning of delivery routes.

The software, known as the Roadnet™ Transportation Suite, is offered by UPS Logistics Technologies and is being used by grocery stores, beverage bottlers and snack food companies, among others, to shave miles off their delivery networks.

German Express Mail service suspends flight to Afghanistan

The world’s largest express mail service DHL has announced that it has suspended cargo flights to Afghanistan due to security concerns.

A spokesman for the Deutsche Post, which owns DHL, said that the Bonn-based company is reviewing the situation in Afghanistan before making further decisions.

FedEx for 'Express' facility in Mumbai

FedEx is in talks with the Centre to have its own dedicated express clearance facility at Mumbai airport. Managing Director-Indian Subcontinent, Mr Jacques Creeten, confirmed.

The proposed facility will be an all integrated entity having its own dedicated security and Customs areas among other essentials. At present, the company is operating in India through Mumbai, using it as the main hub for in- and out-bound express-shipments.

UPS announces rates for 2004

UPS has announced new rates for most U.S. services effective Jan. 5, 2004. UPS commercial ground services will increase 1.9% with U.S. air and UPS Worldwide Express services increasing an average of 2.9%. The premium for packages and letters delivered to residential addresses will rise from $1.15 to $1.40.

UPS also will introduce a $1.00 delivery surcharge to commercial shipments headed to more remote ZIP codes. These ZIP codes are the same as those covered by the current residential delivery area surcharge, which was first applied in 1999 and remains at $1.75. The majority of UPS’s accessorial charges stay the same.

Nightspeed Secure Worldwide Express says it has gained business from retailers with its new Printspeed service to distribute fragile marketing items and print goods.

Nightspeed collects parcels from Michael John Design and delivers them to branches of Tesco and Boots throughout the UK and southern Ireland. It also delivers promotional items for Sainsbury.
