PARCELFORCE CUTS LOSES

Parcelforce Worldwide has cut operational losses by 40% from £98m to £59m in the first half of the year following the termination of uneconomic contract and continue job losses.

In the past year the firm has restructured including a change in focus to entirely handling express, time-guaranteed parcels for business customers.

The pace of moving to the planned level of owner-drivers is now behind schedule due to “the prevailing industrial relations climate”.

A prominent international scientific society has awarded UPS the 2003 INFORMS Prize for integrating operations research and managerial decision-making.

The Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) said it was honoring UPS because the company had so embraced the application of operational research and managerial science as to affect the overall success of the entire organization.

French TAT Express to cut additional 60 jobs

TAT Express, the parcels subsidiary of French post office La Poste, has presented a new redundancy plan, following the annulment of the previous one by a Tours court at the start of November. The latest plan involves 539 job cuts out of 1,500, 60 more than the previous plan. Management say they have had to increase the number of redundancies because of the deterioration of the financial situation.

Nippon Express launches U.S. domestic service

Nippon Express, one of the world’s biggest international freight forwarders, has launched a domestic air and truck service to select U.S. cities. The service is initially available from Seattle and Portland to Chicago and other Midwest destinations and New York. Nippon said it will gradually expand the list of destinations it serves. The Japan-based forwarder said it’s offering three service levels – next-day, second-day and deferred. It also provides pick-ups and door-to-door delivery. Nippon launched the service late last month.

HSN has engaged UPS in a multi-year agreement to streamline and re-engineer its entire fulfillment and supply chain operations.
