FedEx opposes transportation nominee

FedEx is opposing the nomination of Kirk Van Tine to become the No 2 official at the Transportation Department.

Van Tine was the department’s general counsel when the government gave the airlines USD5 billion to compensate for losses sustained after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Transportation officials later demanded that FedEx return about a third of the USD101 million it received because it hadn’t lost as much as it had claimed.

Philippine Subic airport expanded for FedEx benefit

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has expanded the Subic Bay International Airport in Olongapo City to accommodate the growing operations of United States air courier giant FedEx.

SBMA Chairman Felicito C. Payumo said yesterday that the 3.74-hectare new land area of the airport is vital in sustaining the operations of FedEx and for the long-term economic development program of the free port zone. The airport had an originally area of 800 hectares.

TNT ready to up Thai services

TNT Thailand aims to expand its domestic network to apply same-day delivery services nationwide after achieving its five-year growth target two years ahead of schedule, said Winfried Kiesbueye, country general manager.

It currently offers same-day service for Greater Bangkok and next-day service upcountry. “Our services will be applied as the same-day service around the country by the middle of next year.”To facilitate that goal, TNT is in the process of establishing four more offices in Phuket, Nakhon Sawan, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani. It now has 11 offices and 14 agents countrywide.

FedEx plans direct flights to new Japan airport

FedEx Corp may operate direct flights between the US and the new international airport, off the coast of Aichi prefecture, in central Japan, when it opens in 2005.

FedEx aims to win business related to Expo 2005 Aichi, and meet growing demand for cargo transported via Japan to China, said Michael Ducker, executive vice-president in charge of international operations.
