Proposed U.S customs rules could force modernization

The Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Customs and Border Protection last week published a proposed regulation that would require carriers to electronically notify customs officials of cargo destined for the United States, hours before it crosses the border. “Advance cargo information is essential to not only preventing instruments of terrorism from being shipped into this country but also to speed the flow of legitimate cargo across our borders,” Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge said in announcing the proposed rules.

French parcels firms lobby for fair play

Four major French parcel delivery operators, Gefco, Heppner, Mory and Dachser-owned Graveleau, have set up a lobby group to combat what they consider to be unfair competition in the sector.

Halte – Honorable Association de Transporteurs et Logisticens Europeens) – is headed by former Gefco senior executive Claude Leroi and focuses on public sector firms operating in the private domain, which receive unofficial state aid or subsidies in the event of financial difficulties.

Halte intends to collaborate with its German counterpart, Wettbewerbsverein, in drawing up a policy document.

Post Malaysia Bhd wants to increase its share in the domestic courier market from 30% currently to 40% in the next two years. Its chairman Datuk Annuar Maaruf said the bigger market share will be achieved via its new services, Poslaju On Demand Pick-Up Service and Domestic Time Certain Service (TCS).

Sinotrans and UPS joint venture

Sinotrans Ltd, a Chinese freight forwarder, will procure a 50 percent stake in a joint venture with United Parcel Service.

Sinotrans said it will pay US$652,200, through its 70 percent-owned unit Shanghai-listed Sinotrans Air Transportation Co Ltd (Sinoair), for the stake from its controlling shareholder, state-run, China National Foreign Trade Transportation Group, Corp.
