DHL sets up help desks for traders in Philippines

International courier services provider DHL Worldwide Express Corp. is discussing with the Board of Investments and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority ways to make the Philippines a major trading hub in the region. DHL Philippines country manager Charles Brewer said in an interview yesterday that the company had put some initiatives in place to help make the country more prominent in the global trading map.Among these initiatives is the setting up within the country’s economic zones of help desks for neophyte exporters and importers with 24/7 delivery and pick-up schedules.

DHL Forecasts 25% Annual Growth in India

In India, DHL is betting that growth will come from fashion, auto parts, information technology and electronics. DHL to move British IT jobs

DHL is mulling a cost-saving measure that would shift most of its British information technology operations to Eastern Europe. An internal memo outlined the express carrier’s plans to outsource as many as 350 jobs in the United Kingdom, while jobs at its Basel, Switzerland operation will also be affected, according to a report by British-based ComputerWeekly.com. DHL operates two British datacenters that handle application development, and application and operations support. DHL has 700 IT employees in the U.K., the publication reported.

DHL set to open USD1.5m airport facility in Pasay

As part of the first phase of its investment program, air express company DHL will open its newly refurbished airport gateway facility in Villamor Air Base, Pasay City in September. DHL Express Philippines country manager Charles Brewer yesterday said the refurbishment of the nearly one-hectare facility is estimated to have cost between USD1.5 million and USD2 million. “We have completely renovated the facility. We are opening it on Sept. 24. We have the state-of-the-art IT equipment and new customs offices,” he said, in a talk with reporters. Mr. Brewer said DHL is already preparing for the second phase of its investment program, which could include the opening of more service centers. However, the location of new service centers would depend on customer demand.

UPS to spend USD100m on Hong Kong hub

Global express operator United Parcel Service (UPS) is set to splash out USD100 million to make Hong Kong its hub for trade with Europe, pending regulatory approval of its second tranche of aviation rights under last year’s Air Services Agreement with the United States, according to industry sources. The sources said the Louisville-based firm would spend the money buying a dedicated aircraft, expanding its capacity allocation at Hongkong Air Cargo Terminals (Hactl) and purchasing additional ground-handling equipment should it gain additional fifth-freedom rights through Hong Kong in October. The news comes after the carrier’s announcement last month that it had moved responsibility for its burgeoning Greater China business to Shanghai, prompting speculation that the importance of Hong Kong in its Asia network was waning.
