Door to door parcel deliveries up 3.7% in Japan

The number of parcels handled by door-to-door parcel delivery services in Japan in fiscal 2002 grew 3.7 pct from the previous year to 2,751.36 million units, the government said Monday. The rise reflected increased shopping by mail order, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said.

House leader alleges discrimination against U.S. express companies

The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to investigate competitive conditions in overseas markets for U.S.-based express courier companies. In a letter dated June 30, Rep. Bill Thomas, R.-Calif., said his concerns stem from “continued discriminatory treatment by foreign governments in areas such as licensing,” as well as market-distorting conditions that can arise overseas. Thomas’s letter to ITC chairman Deanna Tanner Okun requested that the fact-finding investigation “examine the composition of the global industry, major market participants, and factors driving change, including regulatory reform in major markets.”

BECK AND CALL DELIVERS FOR AMTRAK

Beck &Call, the company offering a timed home delivery service for retailers and consumers in south- west London, is now handling home deliveries for parcels carrier Amtrak within its operational area. “It’s a difficult area for us in some ways,” Amtrak managing director Jonathan Smith told e.logistics magazine.

Finnish Post offers new international service

The Finnish Post is to launch a new international service with its Global Courier express service. Global Courier will reportedly contain two service levels, with the faster of the two delivering items to the major European business centres by 0830 local time the following morning. The second option is a scheduled express service to over 200 countries that will deliver items to major European cities the next day, while most other destinations will be delivered the second day after shipment.
