US: Tax rebate leads more to file returns

Internal Revenue Service representatives said Monday 14th April they were expecting an increase in the number of tax returns filed this year.

The rise is due largely to an extra incentive — being one of the 130 million Americans expected to receive a federally funded rebate intended to encourage increased spending and stimulate the nation’s economy.

The IRS will use tax returns to determine eligibility and assess the amount a person receives, with single filers getting up to USD 600, and couples up to USD 1,200, plus USD 300 per dependent child.

Increased volume this time of year is nothing new for the U.S. Postal Service, which expects to handle around 59 million federal tax returns this year, or 43 percent of all individual returns filed.

Despite the increase of electronic filing in recent years, this year’s overall rise in filings is expected to also raise the number of mailed returns over last year by 3 percent, according to Tim Ratliff, postal service spokesman for the Northern Illinois district.

“Obviously, there is an increase of people filing electronically for all sorts of reasons,” he said. “At the same time, there is still a huge percentage of people that still depend on the postal service to mail their tax returns.”

And as in the past, Ratliff encourages people to file as early as possible but said the postal service has managed to adapt in order to accommodate one of the more exasperating traits in human nature.

Deutsche Post and Fedex talks on U.S. express partnership deal fail

Talks between Deutsche Post World Net AG. and Fedex Corp. on a strategic partnership in the U.S. express market have collapsed, Handelsblatt reported.

‘Talks with Fedex on a cooperation have fizzled out,’ the report quoted Axel Funhoff, analyst at Dutch Bank ING Groep N.V. as saying, attributing his information to sources close to the companies.

Deutsche Post’s DHL express operations in the United States have posted unspecified losses since the German mail services company entered the market in 2004.

Chief executive Frank Appel in a recent interview said the company is in talks with potential partners but said Deutsche Post is not dependent on finding a partner.

The report said a spokeswoman for Deutsche Post declined to comment on the matter.

DHL first in Asia Pacific logistics industry to implement ISO standards across entire business

DHL announced that its freight forwarding business unit, DHL Global Forwarding, has become the first in the industry to fully implement two of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) best known standards – ISO 9001:2000 for quality management and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management.

The ISO 9001:2000 certification emphasizes DHL Global Forwarding’s consistent quality management processes which it has established and continued to develop to increase customer satisfaction. DHL’s internal processes go beyond the basic conditions set by ISO and include key performance indicators for all functions, compliance checks and reviews and customer feedback mechanisms.

Concerns over Chinese postal law

China should improve transparency of a new law governing the country’s USD 6 billion-a-year express delivery market, say executives at UPS. An updated version of China’s Postal Law, which was promulgated in 1986, is in its ninth version and has been a source of concern for foreign and domestic courier companies pitted againstChina Post, the incumbent.

Ken Torok, UPS Asia Pacific president, noted that transparency surrounding the law’s most recent drafts had deteriorated. There are concerns China could introduce a“universal tax” of 4 percent on overseasentrants.

Torok contrasted the opacity of China’s new postal law with a more open process in India, which is also revising its antiquated regulatory regime and posts drafts on the internet.“When they do that everyone has visibility,”Torok said. “We’d like to seemore of that in China.”

Uncertainty also surrounds how China intends to “carve out the monopoly”. According to an earlier draft of the law, only China Post’s express delivery arm would be allowed to deliver parcels weighing less than 150g– a restriction of particular concernto the incumbent’s domestic competitors.Last October, an increasingly vocaldomestic lobby of state-owned and privatecourier companies that competeagainst China Post took issue with theproposed limit.

Booz Allen Hamilton, a consultancy, estimates China’s express delivery market will reach USD 5.8 billion this year and USD 7.4 billion in 2008.

DHL wins the 'choice of the year' contest in Belarus

DHL has become a winner in the ‘2007 No. 1 Worldwide Express Delivery Service’ category in the international ‘Choice of the Year’ contest, which took place in early April in the Republic of Belarus.

The contest’s main objective is to determine the highest quality products and services in the Belarus market. The status of the event as a worldwide competition allows for both international and local brands to run for prizes in the same contest.

The ‘Choice of the Year’ contest held in Belarus is distinct for its unique assessment method in determining winners. To ensure that objective results are obtained, the steering committee conducts an all-round evaluation of all products and services in the market (regardless of whether the companies who market these products and services participate in the contest or not). This is followed by an in-depth market survey, which assigns a general score to the company, with the scores allocated by consumers (taken from a direct survey of up to 1500 respondents) comprising 40 pct of the total. 30 pct of the general score is made up of expert opinion, while the remaining 30 pct is taken from the assessment of the advertising strategy of each competing company and the opinions of the jury and steering committee.

The annual review and validation of the study results of the ‘Choice of the Year’ competition is performed by the global auditing firm Deloitte.
