DHL Express validated for C-TPAT program

DHL announced today that DHL Express has been validated for C-TPAT, the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, after a thorough review of its air express and ground shipment processing facilities and operations. C-TPAT is a joint government-business initiative designed to protect the security of the U.S. supply chain. Companies that are certified contribute to the security of our U.S. borders and to the continued facilitation of legitimate international trade.

As part of the validation process, domestic and international DHL facilities underwent a detailed security review of operations by customs authorities, including procedures and guidelines followed by DHL personnel and contractors, and the use of technology and physical assets. The US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) review also included Express’ customs brokerage and international clearance operations.

“This validation acknowledges our commitment to security procedures followed by our personnel, our air service providers, as well as those in place to protect our customers’ shipments,” said T. James Min II, Vice President, International Trade Affairs & Compliance, DHL Express USA. “DHL’s commitment to stringent security measures plays a key role in helping the U.S. Customs and Border Protection maintain the security of U.S. borders and curb potential terrorist activities in the global supply chain.”

To qualify for membership in C-TPAT, companies must conduct a detailed self-assessment of supply chain security using the C-TPAT guidelines outlined by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the trade community. Companies must also submit a supply chain security profile questionnaire to Customs, and implement a program to enhance security throughout the supply chain in accordance with the C-TPAT guidelines.

DHL Express was initially certified for C-TPAT by Customs and Border Protection in 2003 with validations taking place in 2006 and 2007.

Vehicle design innovation saves fuel and reduces CO2

DHL Exel Supply Chain and TK Maxx have partnered with manufacturer Don-Bur to design and develop a new aerodynamic front bulkhead air deflector for double deck trailers that provides both environmental benefits, carbon and cost reductions without compromising the cubic capacity of the vehicle.

Results from initial controlled trials by DHL show that the new air deflector can provide up to 3.5pct savings on fuel and can reduce CO2 by 20kg per daily trip or an equivalent of 5.25 tonnes per vehicle per annum. Following the successful trial, the air deflector has been fitted to ten of TK Maxx’s new double deck trailers and once retrofitted to the remaining 92 in the fleet throughout 2008, will provide the retailer with significant emissions and fuel cost savings.

DHL Exel Supply Chain’s specialist Department Stores and Fashion team, jointly with DHL Central Engineering, have worked with TK Maxx to develop a solution that improves fuel economy on double deck trailers without compromising load capacity and without incurring the cost of new vehicle purchases. The two companies began to investigate how to make the trailers more aerodynamic and approached manufacturer Don-Bur to design and produce a prototype that met with these key objectives and could be implemented quickly and easily.

The unique streamlined shape of the air deflector designed by Don-Bur reduces the quantity of air being forced into the gap between the tractor and the trailer, minimizing turbulence and the resultant ‘drag force’ on the vehicle.

This is the latest initiative in a series of projects developed by TK Maxx and DHL, reflecting the contractual ‘green’ clause between both companies, which outlines their commitment to working together to meet key environmental goals

DHL Express Sweden invests in all-green distribution fleet

DHL Express Sweden has announced it will invest about EUR 800,000 for 250 vehicles running on alternative fuels within the next three years.

DHL Express plans to swap out diesel-powered vehicles from its own fleet as their leases expire, as well as to cover the additional cost of another 50 vehicles when any of the forwarders contracted to DHL switches to an environmentally friendly alternative. This follows the recent decision by DHL Express to convert all its diesel-powered vans to run on alternative fuels such as biogas, natural gas and ethanol.

The company said that the use of delivery vehicles that run on alternative fuels means a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 5-8 tons per vehicle per year. As the investment covers 250 vehicles, this is equivalent to a total carbon dioxide reduction of around 2,000 tons per year.

DHL Express Sweden currently has around 20 biogas-powered vehicles available, including 5 heavy trucks and 15 delivery vans used mainly to transport express shipments within metropolitan areas. The number of environmentally friendly vehicles is about to increase substantially.

“Every year we use the Swedish TKM model (the freight forwarders quality and environmental manual) to evaluate the 300 carriers contracted to DHL in this country. Given that we place these requirements on other carriers, it is only natural for us to practice what we preach. That is why the transition to delivery vehicles that run on alternative fuels seems like an obvious investment,” said Peter Hesslin, Operations Manager for DHL Express, responsible for handling goods up to 2.5 tons at around 30 terminals in Sweden.

Another major environmental effect of this investment concerns emissions of particulates and nitric oxide associated with jams in city centres. This is because particulate emissions from vehicles that run on alternative fuels are much reduced. But the investment covers not only DHL’s own vehicles but also diesel-powered distribution vehicles operated by the 300 forwarders contracted to DHL in Sweden. In this area, DHL is covering the additional cost of the transition to environmentally-adapted vehicles.
