Royal Mail claims UK postal strike is flagging as rivals target business

The Royal Mail claimed that support for the controversial postal strike was “weakening” yesterday as talks between the two sides aimed at bringing an end to the disruption continued.

The Royal Mail, in its statement, maintained that “50 per cent more people” were working compared with previous strike days.

It said: “Attendance at strikes across the country varied hugely with up to 90 per cent of our people working as normal in some offices and with about 35,000 people coming to work as usual during the first 24-hour period of action. This is around a third of people due to be at work. We expect this level to rise over the next few days.” The Royal Mail said “the high level of attendance” meant it was continuing to process mail and that deliveries were taking place across the country, although at reduced levels.

The two-day strike – over a 2.5 per cent pay offer, job cuts, changes to working practices and plans to change the company’s generous final-salary pension scheme – was called by the 130,000-strong Communications Workers’ Union and started on Thursday. A second stoppage planned for Monday means the dispute will paralyse deliveries for a week.

A CWU spokeswoman said: “We are not at all concerned by Royal Mail putting that out. It is always possible to find offices where more people have turned up, but we know we have the overwhelming support of our members.”

The spokeswoman said in response to criticism that the strike will damage the postal industry: “We are very concerned about the future of Royal Mail, which is why we found ourselves in this position. We don’t feel that the business is addressing the problem of competition effectively and we are incredibly keen to have an agreement. That is why we are still in negotiations.”

FedEx filing hints at plan to build USD 87 M hub in Toledo area

In another indication that it plans to remain in the Toledo metropolitan area, package shipper FedEx Ground yesterday applied for tax abatement to build a new regional hub in Perrysburg Township.

The company would move from its present location in South Toledo to a planned USD 87 million facility on a parcel east of the Buck Road and I-75 interchange.

Under its application submitted yesterday to Wood County, FedEx Ground is asking for a 100 percent tax abatement on improvements to the property in Perrysburg Township.

A spokesman for Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said the move would be good for FedEx, Toledo, and the township because of a proposed joint economic development agreement that would allow for water and sewer services and tax-sharing.

Currently, FedEx’s local terminal is on Reynolds Road near Angola Road. It has about 400 employees, according to its application.

FedEx’s application says it plans to spend USD 48 million on new construction and USD 39 million on equipment as well as USD 73,000 on furniture and fixtures.

Work on the project would begin in November and end in June, 2009.

The application states that FedEx would create 31 new full-time and 91 new part-time jobs over the first three years, with total new wages of USD 2.9 million.

The existing annual payroll is 152 full-time employees and 259 part-time employees, paid a total of USD 9.2 million a year.

Nationally, FedEx Ground is undergoing a USD 1.8 billion expansion.

FedEx Ground’s income tax is said to yield about USD 200,000 a year for Toledo.

Courier companies should 'get out there' during mail strike in the UK

The latest round of postal strikes may be bad news for many businesses, but it is a boon for courier companies.

Speaking to the BBC, Robin Mackintosh of Maidenhead courier firm Fast Lane International said that industrial action at Royal Mail is good news for his business and other couriers.

“It’s beneficial to the courier trade in general when there’s a postal strike and we as a company gain long-term business from that situation,” he said.

“It’s clearly beneficial to us but chaotic for everyone else. Without taking a swipe at Royal Mail, when people see the benefits they reap from speed, traceability and value for money then they often use our services again.”

He said his firm would enjoy a 60 per cent increase in inquiries each day, as businesses look to ensure their post gets through.

A British Chamber of Commerce spokesman gave out the same message.

“Businesses need to get cheques out in the post. What solutions have they got? This is the only solution for the next few days,” he said.

“Our advice to courier firms is to get out there, because you’re knocking on open doors.”

The current dispute at Royal Mail is over pay, pensions and proposed business changes. The Communications Workers Union is worried that the changes “will actually take the service backwards”.
