Business Direct: New Board Appointments

Richard Martin has been appointed Managing Director of In-Night Division.

Richard joined Business Direct in April 2007 as General Manager / Director of the In-Night Division. Immediately prior to this, Richard was at Parcelnet, the UK’s largest national courier home delivery specialist, from October 2003 as General Manager; at Exel Logistics, from April 2002 to October 2003 as Commercial Manager; and at Christian Salvesen, from May 1994 to April 2002, latterly as Network Transport Director.

Richard Hunt CBE has been appointed as Senior Non-executive Director.

Richard has wide experience in the logistics industry. He was at The Go-Ahead Group from April 2002 to October 2005 as Chief Executive of its Aviation Division and Aviance Limited; at NFC, then the largest UK transport and logistics business, from April 1995 to December 1999 as Executive Director Operations – UK and Ireland and Chief Executive – Exel Logistics Europe; and at Brown & Tawse from March 1993 to April 1995 as Logistics Director, on the main Board of this fully listed company.

Composition of the Board:

Following Richard Martin’s and Richard Hunt’s appointments, Business Direct’s Board comprises eight Directors: five executive Directors – Paul Carvell (CEO), Martin Wright (CFO), Tim Houstoun, Richard Martin and Martyn Wilson – and three independent non-executive Directors – Russell Hodgson (Chairman), Richard Hunt and Graham Norfolk.

DHL USA adds third daily flight for Mather operations

DHL will add a third flight from Mather Airport starting Saturday in an effort to meet the increased demand for the shipping service in the Sacramento region.

The company has added a DC-9 jet, which will arrive at 8:14 p.m. and depart at 4:23 a.m. Monday through Saturday. DHL already has two daily flights from Mather with Boeing 767 jets. A 70 percent increase in shipments prompted the third flight, company officials said.

DHL also benefits with lower operating costs at Mather compared to Bay Area airports.

The Sacramento County Airport System oversees the planning, developing, operating and maintaining of Mather Airport. More than 135 million pounds of air cargo were shipped from Mather in 2006, generating USD 200 million for the local economy, airport officials said in a news release.

DHL Express Hungary launches regular cargo service from FlyBalaton

German express delivery company DHL Express will start operating a weekly five cargo flights from the FlyBalaton airport in Sarmellek (SW Hungary), the airport told MTI on Monday.

FlyBalaton recently completed a EUR 2.5m air cargo base with the aim of turning the airport into a regional logistics base.

DHL is renting the necessary infrastructure at the airport. It is also paying to have its aircraft service there.

UK postal union extends strike suspension until Sunday for further talks

A UK postal union has agreed to extend a suspension of planned strikes for a further five days to resolve a pay row with Royal Mail.

The Communication Workers Union, which suspended planned industrial action on Aug 10 until today after agreeing to enter a new round of talks with Royal Mail, said the two sides would extend their negotiations until Sun Sept 9 ‘to resolve all issues in dispute’.

Union members have already held two 24-hour strikes and a week of rolling walkouts in the row about Royal Mail’s 2.5 pct pay offer and planned job cuts.

The mail operator says increased automation is necessary to deal with ‘the harsh commercial reality’ of the market.
