TNT opens new office in Mendoza, Argentina

TNT Express has continued its expansion in South America with the opening of larger premises in the Argentinean city of Mendoza last July. .

The new facility, with handling space of 250 msq, 300 msq of storage capacity and associated offices, is four times larger than the previous depot, the company said.

TNT Argentina said that the enlarged premises followed double-digit growth of 15 pct in weight transported and of 13 pct in volumes over the last six months. “We are thus consolidating in one of the most important export regions in the country,” the company stated.

“This will enable us to improve our consolidated air cargo service and to broaden the operational capacity ready for the peak season,” commented branch manager José Luis Bellino.

TNT Argentina has own offices at Buenos Aires international airport and downtown Buenos Aires as well as in the cities of Córdoba, Rosario, Mar del Plata, Mendoza and a recently opened branch in Salta.

ASTAR Air Cargo Acquires Aircraft

ASTAR Air Cargo today announced it has finalized terms to purchase two DC-8-73 aircraft with long-range capabilities and a spare engine currently leased from Bank of America’s leasing division. Acquisition financing to ASTAR has been arranged and is being provided by HSH Nordbank AG, New York Branch. The aircraft are part of ASTAR’s current dedicated fleet assigned to DHL Express under a long-term ACMI agreement expiring in 2019.

“ASTAR made the strategic decision to purchase these airplanes to enhance our position as a provider of airlift services for our primary customer, DHL Express,” said Steven A. Rossum, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of ASTAR. “Less than a year ago, HSH arranged and provided the financing to enable ASTAR to complete the acquisition of 20 Boeing 727-200A Freighters. This newest acquisition of aircraft is consistent with our business growth strategy to lower our costs and enhance our competitiveness”.

Sri Lanka Postal Department loses heavily, says the Post Master General

Sri Lanka Postmaster General Shervin Senadheera said that the income of the Postal Department in 2006 was Rs. 2.9 billion (USD 0.025 billion) while the expenses were Rs. 5.6 billion (USD 0.05 billion). Therefore the department always depends on the grants provided by the Treasury, said the Post Master General.

The Post Master General said that the department authorities are planning the ways to increase the income through new ventures.

The workers of the Postal Department launched a sick note campaign yesterday as a token measure to urge the government to see to the workers’ problems and the malpractices in the department.

A discussion is to be held on Thursday between the trade unions and the Minister of Posts and Telecommunication Rauf Hakeem.

Mackenzie of UPS Freight to retire. Jack Holmes named President

Jack Holmes, a 28-year UPS veteran who has headed the operations of UPS Freight for the past year, has been promoted to president of the trucking unit to replace the retiring Gordon Mackenzie.

Holmes, 47, headed the UPS transition team after the company acquired the former Overnite Transportation Co. in 2005. For the past year, he has served as the senior vice president of operations at UPS Freight.

Mackenzie is a veteran of more than 40 years in the transportation industry, including the last 12 at UPS Freight and Overnite. Mackenzie has served as president of UPS Freight since Aug. 1, 2006, and will step down Sept. 10.

“Gordon Mackenzie played a critical role in the development of Overnite Transportation and then stayed on board with us to ensure a smooth integration and to help set the stage for the growth we’re seeing now,” said Mike Eskew, UPS’s chairman and CEO. “All of us at UPS appreciate his contributions and wish him the very best in retirement.”

Before joining Overnite in 1996, Mackenzie served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Preston Trucking Company. He also held various executive positions with Standard Trucking Company; Ryder/PIE Nationwide, Inc., and Transcon Lines, Inc. Prior to assuming the post of president of UPS Freight, Mackenzie served as the unit’s chief operating officer.

Holmes began his UPS career in 1979 in West Chester, Pa., as a part-time employee. He became a package car driver in 1982 and was promoted to management in Philadelphia in 1983. He served in various operations, engineering and safety assignments in Alabama, Georgia, Utah and in the Chicago area before being named head of the UPS Freight transition team.

According to the American Trucking Associations, UPS Freight now is the nation’s fourth-largest less-than-truckload (LTL) company.

HongKong's daily express mail to treble by 2015

Hong Kong’s daily express mail volume is expected to treble to 2.3 million items by 2015, said Postmaster General,Hongkong Post Mr Tam Wing-pong.

Tam said as Mainland China was entering a new era of fast economic growth in the international platform, Hongkong Post was seeing rapid growth in international mail and parcel volume creating opportunities in the short/mediumterms for its transit service.

Apart from conventional services, Hongkong Post can also serve as a“Value-added National Gateway to PostalNetwork of China, he said, adding thatthe country could ride on HongkongPost’s well-established infrastructure andhigh performance as well as its valueaddedhubbing service.
