Adrexo and Altadis to develop a network of parcel collection points in France

Adrexo, the first licensed mail competitor to La Poste, is setting up a B2C parcels service to take on the French post office’s ColiPoste subsidiary and other parcel companies in the fast-growing market segment. It is also developing its postal delivery services.

Adrexo has signed a deal with the French-Spanish tobacco group Altadis to develop a network of parcel collection points through the latter’s nationwide network of tobacconist kiosks and stores, the Les Echos business newspaper reported last Tuesday.

The new service will start in January 2008 with two important launch customers, cosmetics group Yves Rocher and mail-order retailer Quelle France, the newspaper said. Quelle previously used ColiPoste for home delivery and Kiala’s Point Relais network for parcel drop-offs at retail outlets, according to information on its website.

Adrexo, a subsidiary of Ouest France, with a turnover of 600 million euros. Adrexo is a major player in unaddressed mail, and entered the addressed mail market in 2004. It claims to reach 95% of letterboxes in France. Adrexo now operates in the mail market above 50g, in direct mail, magazine and catalogue distribution, unaddressed advertising mail, and address management. In 2006 Adrexo delivered 25 million items.

Express Couriers acquire Roadstar Transport Ltd

Monday July 2nd 2007, sees Roadstar Transport under the new ownership of Express Couriers Ltd. GLS Germany acquires 400 trailer units

GLS Germany has invested €3 million in 400 new “jumbo-size” trailer units to build up capacity for increasing volumes.
Thirty of the trailers are already in operation, and the remainder will be integrated into the network ready for the autumn peak season, the parcel delivery company said in a statement.
GLS currently has about 2,800 trailer units in operation, including 1,100 jumbo-size units with about 15% more loading capacity.
GLS Germany belongs to General Logistics Systems International Holding BV (GLS), which was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Amsterdam. It is a Pan-European company providing parcel and express services as well as value-added logistics solutions. The company offers its services through wholly owned and partner companies in 33 European states.

DHL New Zealand venture Express Couriers buys Roadstar Transport Ltd

Express Couriers, the joint venture between DHL and New Zealand Post, fulfil customer demand with the acquisition of Roadstar Transport Ltd.

This acquisition while further cementing Express Couriers market leadership, responds to customer demand for the addition of a multi-package and palletised transport solution to their current Whole Package offering.

Following on from Express Couriers transition to New Zealand Post and DHL joint ownership two years ago, this next leap forward is a signal of their commitment to the market, and their customers.

Broadening The Whole Package offer with the addition of multi-package and palletised transport solutions, compliment Express Couriers current range of services provided by Pace, CourierPost and Contract Logistics alongside the wider services of New Zealand Post and DHL.

The two companies will continue to operate independently, and each of their current portfolios of products and services will be maintained. The Roadstar management will remain with the company, and no job losses are planned.

Roadstar, with nearly 200 staff, has a fleet of 141 trucks and transports about 40,000 consignments a month.

DHL subsidiary to bid for US cargo airline

Astar Air Cargo, a US cargo airline in which DHL Express, the express and logistics subsidiary of German postal service operator Deutsche Post, holds a minority stake, has launched a takeover bid on US rival ABX. Astar is offering USD 7.75 per share in ABX, which puts the value of the company at USD 455m; it is possible that the company may have to up its bid, however, as shares in ABX climbed to USD 8.07 following the announcement of the offer.

ABX was part of US transport company Airborne, which has since been taken over by DHL Express, until 2003; DHL is still virtually the airline’s only customer, representing 95 per cent of turnover. Over 95 per cent of the volume of freight transported by Astar is also for DHL. A spokesperson for Deutsche Post has welcomed the bid, saying that considerable improvements in efficiency are expected.
