Speed Post intra-city rates slashed by 40%

The Department of Posts on Monday revised its tariffs for Speed Post service whereby sending packets within a city has become cheaper by 40 per cent even as couriering parcel over long distance has become dearer

The DoP has reduced rates of local Speed Post for packets weighing less than 50 g by 40 per cent. A 50-g packet can now be sent anywhere within a city for Rs 12 instead of Rs 20 being charged at present. The move is aimed at capturing market share from private courier companies, which are already offering local delivery at around Rs 10 for a 50-g packet. The move comes even as DoP is facing a Budget deficit of nearly Rs 1,400 crore

Mr John Samuel, General Manager, Department of Post, however, said that the tariff reduction will not have any impact on DoP’s revenues as volumes are expected to grow. “When we launched One India tariff, we saw a 45 per cent increase in traffic. We are expecting a similar surge in our local post traffic, which until now has been dominated by private courier firms.” Distance slabs The Postal Department has, however, increased the tariff for long distance Speed Post service for higher weight categories. A 500-g packet to be sent over 2,000 km will now cost Rs 80 instead of Rs 70 at present. Similarly, a 500-g packet sent to a destination that is over 1,000 km away will now cost Rs 70 instead of Rs 60. The department blamed the increase in transportation costs for the hike in long distance Speed Post tariffs. The revised tariffs will come into effect from today

Though Mr Samuel said that DoP’s tariffs are cheaper than the rates offered by private courier, the increase in tariffs has put it at par with private players. DTDC, for instance, also offers to carry a 500-g packet over distances beyond 200 km for Rs 80. DoP, however, has more number of distance slabs where it offers to carry the same packet for distances less than 1,000 km for Rs 45. It earned Rs 449 crore in 2006-07 from the service

According to the company, DPD Latvija last year served 1.079 million deliveries, up 61 percent year-on-year.

In 2006, DPD Latvija increased its market share in domestic deliveries from 36 percent to 44 percent, for a second consecutive year surpassing Latvijas Pasts postal company. DPD Latvija market share in international deliveries reached 31 percent.

DPD Latvija said that, according to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s data, the company has retained the leading position in both domestic and international services.

The company said that last year it invested in development and quality as well as launched new services. However, the company’s performance was influenced by increase of fuel prices, the total inflation level in the country, the lack of workforce and the increasing wages.

DPD Latvija said that last year’s losses will be covered from next year’s profit.

This year the company plans to continue expansion and develop the domestic and international services as well as pay attention to the quality of services and customer service, said the report.

In 2006, sales by DPD Latvija’s parent company French La Poste Group reached 14.13 billion lats (EUR 20.1 b), which is 4 percent more than in 2005, and the company’s profit was 554.5 million lats, up 30 percent year-on-year.

DPD Latvija, founded in 1998, is a subsidiary of French La Poste Group express delivery provider GeoPost, offering DPD (Direct Parcel Distribution) express delivery services in Latvia, the Baltics and Europe.

DPD Latvija closed 2005 with 55,300 lats in the red on 1.43 million lats of turnover.

DHL buys stake in Astar Air Cargo

DHL on Tuesday announced it has acquired a minority stake in Miami’s Astar Air Cargo for an undisclosed amount.

DHL acquired a 49 percent equity interest and a 24.9 percent voting interest in Astar — just under federal thresholds that restrict foreign ownership of U.S. airlines. DHL is an arm of Germany’s Deutsche Post.

Jonathan Baker, a DHL spokesman, said the transaction was reviewed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The deal comes four years after the airline, then known as DHL Airways, was sold by DHL and a private investor to a group led by former Burger King boss John Dasburg for USD 57 million.

DHL has recently targeted aviation investments to support its operations in the United States. It recently invested in New York’s Polar Air Cargo, which offer delivery services between the United States and Asia.

DHL relies on Astar to handle about a third of its U.S. express domestic air services, Baker said.

The transaction “signals DHL’s confidence in the capabilities of Astar,” said Dasburg, Astar’s chairman, president and CEO.

Federal law prohibits foreign ownership of any U.S. airline to 49 percent and voting interest to 25 percent. The law dates back to 1926.
