UPS Small Business Contest expands beyond U.S.

From Bangor, Maine, to Beijing, China, if you came up with an idea that turned into a business that took off, UPS wants to hear from you. You could win USD 25,000.

Last year, several small businesses – including one dedicated to teaching children about money management and another that provides products and ideas to help people with dementia – were rewarded for their creative thinking and original business concepts. This year, UPS is taking its third annual UPS Best “Out-of-the-Box” Small Business Contest global.

The international contest will honor the most innovative small businesses and is designed for companies with annual 2006 revenues of at least USD 250,000 but not more than USD 10 million. Eligible businesses in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, the Philippines and Singapore are asked to submit a 500-word essay explaining why they’re original and how they’ve been successful.

Small businesses entering the contest must submit a 500-word essay and complete the online entry process at www.ups.com/outofthebox . Entries may be submitted through Sept. 1, 2007, and must be completed by an employee or owner of an eligible business on behalf of that business, with a limit of one entry per business. Largest parcel sorting terminal in the Baltic States opens in Latvia

On May 7th, a new parcel sorting terminal that belongs to DPD European network was officially opened in Riga. The terminal is the largest in the Baltic States with the total sorting area of 2900 sq. m. It is even 500 sq. m larger than last year opened Tallinn terminal.

Latvian parcel sorting terminal is situated in 4 kilometers from Riga’s city center. Total terminal territory is 9600 sq. m. There are 71 pick-up and distribution gates installed, and parcel sorting conveyor is 1 kilometer long. That is five times longer than in Tallinn which previously was called the longest.

“Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian small parcel delivery market usually is treated as one, Baltic country market. That is why the terminal, which is build in strategically convenient place, will increase technical capabilities not even in the country where it is build, but in the neighboring countries – Lithuania and Estonia. The maximum sorting capacity of new terminal is 6 000 parcels per hour or 140 000 parcels per day”, – says Vytautas Kudzys, Managing Director for the Baltic States.

According to him, the need of new terminals shows, that small parcel delivery services are used more often, and trust of companies providing these services is growing.

DPD Latvija turnover was 2,4 mln. Lats (3,4 mln. Eur) in 2006, it was by 69% more than in 2005.

DPD Latvija belongs to international parcel delivery network DPD, which is represented in Lithuania by DPD Lietuva, in Estonia – by DPD Eesti. The shares of these companies belong to French Post company GeoPost.

DHL wins Asia’s Platinum Award for the third straight year

DHL announced it has won the highly coveted and prestigious Asia Platinum Award for the third consecutive year in the Airfreight/Courier Service category at the ninth annual ‘Trusted Brand Awards 2007’ organized by Reader’s Digest.

DHL is the first and only company to be awarded the Platinum Award for the Asia region for three consecutive years and in Hong Kong for four consecutive years, since the Airfreight/Courier Service category was introduced in 2004.

DHL improved on its strong performance in 2006, when it garnered three Platinum and five Gold awards. This year, DHL received Platinum Awards in the ‘Trusted Brand Awards’ surveys conducted in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan, as well as Gold Awards in the same surveys carried out in India, Philippines and Thailand. Singapore and Taiwan were the latest countries in which DHL received the Platinum Award.

The Platinum Award represents the highest honor conferred on a brand in the annual survey. Only brands with a rating score three times the nearest rating score of the next brand, or two times plus reaching a certain average overall quality rating receive the Platinum Award. Gold Awards are given to brands that score clearly above other brands in the category. The survey is conducted by independent research company Nielsen Media Research.

Deutsche Post 2007 Annual General Meeting

The Board of Management and Supervisory Board of DPWN are proposing a dividend of 75 cents for 2006, 7.1 percent more than a year earlier. That corresponds to a payout ratio of 47.1 percent. On average, the dividend has increased 19 percent annually since the Deutsche Post IPO. The company plans to further increase its payout ratio and continue its current dividend policy of sharing its excellent business performance with shareholders. The dividend is tax free for domestic shareholders.

For 2007, the Group reiterated its target to reach an EBIT of at least 3.6 billion euros. That means an increase of at least 3 percent based on the comparable year-ago figure, which included special items such as the exercise of the exchangeable bonds on Postbank shares as well as the related sale of Deutsche Postbank shares.

For its business division MAIL, the Group forecast stable to slightly higher revenue. The division expects that losses in its domestic mail business will be more than offset by the other business units. On an earnings level, the MAIL division expects a stable EBIT of about 2 billion euros. For the EXPRESS division, the Group expects an operating profit of at least 400 million euros for 2007. That includes one-time costs of 100 million euros tied to the new hub in Leipzig, Germany. Excluding these one-time costs, operating profit will amount to over 500 million euros, a more than 50 percent increase compared with the previous year. The LOGISTICS division is expected to raise EBIT by about 15 percent. For the FINANCIAL SERVICES division, the Group forecast an increase of at least 5 percent in EBIT, including one-time expenses of about 100 million euros.
