Oesterreichische Post focuses on Niche Markets in Eastern Europe

Oesterreichische Post AG’s 500 mln eur acquisition and expansion programme will focus on niche markets, private carriers in Eastern Europe and technology providers, according to Chairman Anton Wais.

Wais told the Viennese daily Die Presse that the Austrian postal services company had already earmarked investments of 80 mln eur for expansion in Eastern Europe, up to 150 mln eur for Western Europe and around 120 mln eur for the acquisition of companies with technology expertise.

Wais said that Oesterreichische Post’s acquisitions will continue to focus on niche markets, avoiding direct competition with such parcel logistics giants as DHL and TNT.

Private carriers in Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine will be the next targets of the Austrian company’s acquisition strategy, while investments in national postal providers will only be an option at a later stage, according to Wais.

TNT announce higher revenues and higher operating income in 2007

The year started with a 9.1% increase in revenues and a 7.3% increase in operating income, with both divisions contributing positively to the revenue and operating income growth.
Express continued on the path of double-digit (+12.3%) revenue growth, with an operating margin of 8.0%, close to last year’s level of 8.3%, despite the effect of the recently acquired businesses. Excluding this effect, the margin would have increased to 8.6%.
Express revenue growth was 8.0% in Europe and 32.5% (37.6% at constant rates of exchange) in the Rest of World. The latter included a large (+25.9%) acquisition effect. Mercúrio in Brazil was acquired at the start of the quarter and the acquisition of Hoau in China was completed in March. Together these two businesses add over euro 300 million of annualised revenues to the group.
In Mail Netherlands, addressed mail volumes declined by 4.3%. A euro 14 million one-off gain on sale of real estate, positive price/mix effects and closely controlled costs helped the overall result. In EMN, organic revenue growth exceeded 25%, with continued growth in the UK and German addressed mail businesses. This was augmented by acquisition effects (+14.7%), particularly in the German regional service and mail consolidation.

Nigerian gov't plans independent courier regulatory body

The federal government has planned to establish an independent courier services regulatory body to oversee the operations of courier companies in the country, official said here on Wednesday.

Ibrahim Mori Baba, Post Master General of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), said the new body was part of the reforms aimed at restructuring the courier sub-sector to ensure effective regulation and monitoring.

He said the NIPOST which currently regulated the operation of courier services in the country was a player in the sector.

The independent body would ensure fair competition and stimulate the entire postal sector for better performance and greater economic contribution, he added.

He urged the officers to be good image managers of the organization and introduce best marketing strategies to generate new business to the organization.

According to the NIPOST Public Relations Manager Hussaina Ato, the reforms would also bring about the commercialization of the outfit and the government had no intention of privatizing the establishment.

It is reported that a consultancy firm from the Netherlands was engaged by the federal government last year to carry out the restructuring of NIPOST
