DPD defends Austrian B2B parcel market leadership

DPD has successfully defended its leadership of the Austrian B2B parcels market despite the efforts of expanding Austrian Post to win a sizeable chunk of the market.

DPD Austria has announced that it increased turnover by 6.4% to EUR 132.2 million in 2006, which kept it at the head of the B2B parcels market. DPD carried 34.2 million parcels in Austria last year, which was an increase of 8.2%. About 70% of these volumes were domestic, and 30% were international.

Key success factors were the carrier’s strong regional presence with 13 depots and performance quality of 98% for transit time reliability. “Our regional expertise makes us into a strong partner for our customers,” said managing director Georg Karoh.

For 2007, DPD Austria is targeting turnover growth of 2.5% and a volume increase of 4.5%. The carrier will be putting a special focus on neighbouring Eastern European countries as well as the new EU members Romania and Bulgaria. The carrier has 1,400 employees and 900 vehicles.

Forceful implementation of a sustainable strategy GO! steps on the environmentally friendly gas

GO! Express & Logistics is intensifying its activities in the area of sustainability. With the application of gas-powered vehicles – compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – GO! is really stepping on the environmentally friendly gas at the start of 2006. As a result the provider of courier and express services is not only reducing environmental pollution but is also decisively cutting its operating costs – especially its fuel costs.

“Thanks to our support for the Nestor II study, a European research project by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg (MPIMET), we have been able to examine our operational processes and their efficiency from an emission-control point of view. In the process we have received some useful ideas about the areas where optimisation is possible”, explains Ralf-Hans Dierks, CEO of GO! General Overnight Service (Deutschland) GmbH.

The Nestor II team analysed the CO2 efficiency and energy consumption per shipment. The findings were then presented to a large number of participants from the logistics market on 8 December 2005. The CEP data for the study was provided exclusively by GO! The study was rounded off by an industry survey in the form of interviews, and its results showed that the CEP segment is already operating at a very high level of efficiency. Nevertheless the researchers showed potential for improvement in, for example, the use of telematic and navigation systems, the choice of the optimum delivery vehicle and use of alternative fuels.

UPS cancels superjumbo

UPS’s withdrawal as the last customer for the misbegotten Airbus freighter was all but inevitable for some time, but the breakup between the aircraft manufacturer and the world’s second-largest cargo airline marked an unusually messy end to a freighter purchase agreement.
The muddy ending was rivaled only by the A380 program itself, a project that has fallen far behind schedule.
Passenger airlines have been clamoring for penalty payments and freighter customers dropped their orders as Airbus has undergone a massive management overhaul in the aftermath.
Freighter cancellations by FedEx Express, which became the first in and the first out on the Airbus sales sheet for A380 freighters, Emirates and International Lease Finance Corp. had left UPS as the only cargo customer for the massive new aircraft.
UPS and Airbus seemingly had set the stage in late February for an amicable parting. They announced a redrawn purchase agreement that allowed either side to end the sale under a preset timetable.
But on Feb. 28, Airbus disclosed a restructuring plan in which it will lay off 10,000 employees. And a day later Airbus pulled its workers off the freighter assembly line to work on passenger versions of the plane, an action UPS officials did not learn about directly from the manufacturer.
UPS now is focused on adding the capacity the company believes it will need in the international arena in coming years.
