Deutsche Post World Net partnership with UNICEF

As a form of its concern over a large number of children dying of curable or preventable diseases annually worldwide, Deutsche Post World Net is providing support to UNICEF. The humanitarian project is part of its strategic partnership with the institution responsible for the welfare of children.

Through the strategic partnership, Deutsche Post World Net is extending help in the efficient management of complex logistical processes in addition to a range of other contributions, as an in-kind donation to UNICEF which would help reduce child mortality worldwide.

The group has also been working with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the field of disaster management since December 2005. Here too, the Group provides OCHA and UNDP first and foremost with logistics expertise and the know-how and commitment of its staff.

Deutsche Post World Net’s global cooperation with UNICEF started with a project in Kenya and has been extended step-by-step on the basis of experience in the country. Through its logistics subsidiary DHL, Deutsche Post was able to contribute valuable assistance through its logistical support.

Emirates Post buys fleet for courier service

Emirates Post has commissioned two aircraft to begin an international courier service by mid-March, a top official said.

It is expanding into the air courier business and will begin operations next month, Abdullah Ebrahim Al Daboos, director-general of Emirates Post, told delegates at a logistics conference in Dubai yesterday.

The postal service, which is also planning an initial public offering, will procure a third plane in the next six months to complete its overall plan of a full fleet of planes in the next five years.

The director-general announced that it has assumed control of certain airport operations in the UAE but did not specify which airport the new courier service would fly from.

Air logistics is just one of three new companies Emirates Post plans to introduce in 2007.

Emirates Post plans to diversify its current remittances services by forming a “money management and movement” company slated for this year.

Emirates Post currently provides remittance services through its Wall Street Exchange Centre, but plans to open multiple offices in Asia and Europe with the new company to take advantage of the multi-billion dollar worldwide remittances industry. New offices are targeted for the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, Al Daboos said.

Emirates Post will also create a national trucking service to complement its other ground delivery operations.

The government service is in the process of forming a parent company called Emirates Post Group to oversee its rapidly expanding family of subsidiaries.

FedEx to modernize retirement plans

FedEx Corporation announced new measures it is taking to modernize its retirement plans for most of its employees. These measures will take place in the coming year and are in direct response to recent legislative, regulatory and demographic changes that continue to dramatically reshape U.S. retirement benefit needs.

FedEx will continue to offer highly competitive retirement benefits funded entirely by the company and will also enhance its 401(k) plans. The company expects to spend about the same amount on its employees’ retirement plans over the long run as it would have spent under the current design and current rules.
Under the new program, most eligible employees who participate in a pension plan will begin accruing future benefits under a cash balance formula, which FedEx calls the Portable Pension Account, effective June 1, 2008. Any benefits already accrued under a traditional pension benefit formula will be capped as of May 31, 2008 and will be payable monthly at retirement. These changes will not affect the benefits of current retirees.
