Delivering on time the key to success

Qualifications needed:

When I took the job I had no courier experience and FedEx gave me all the training I needed. I got new hire initiation, safety initiation, courier training, and defensive driving training courses.

Whizzing around the city as a courier often means going the extra mile to ensure packages arrive at their destination

What are the career prospects?

Who knows what the future may hold but I have the opportunity to move into management, change fields into customs clearance or operational support. I also have the opportunity to support Pacific Island operations from here in Auckland. We have access to development and training programmes as well as tuition reimbursements and over 500 e-learning courses on the FedEx intranet to help me in any direction I wish to take.

Describe your job.

I deliver and pick up documents and packages. Each day brings something new _ different delivery or pick up addresses, different types of customers. I also enjoy the day to day contact with my customers.

FedEx calls for greater flying rights

Express cargo carrier Federal Express has called on the Hong Kong government to provide more fifth-freedom rights to US air cargo operators to run freighter services between Hong Kong and other northeast Asian cities.

“The Hong Kong government has opened up more of the skies in the past few years, but it needs to speed up more bilateral talks with foreign countries in the future,” said Clifton Chua, FedEx Express, managing director for Hong Kong, Macau and Philippines. FedEx Express is a subsidiary of FedEx Corp.

In October 2002, Hong Kong and the United States agreed to expand passenger and air cargo services under a pact which set the stage for a large increase, in three phases, in US airline rights to provide all-cargo services between Hong Kong and third countries, also called fifth-freedom rights. Opportunities have opened up for US carriers under the pact, but some restrictions on frequencies and routes still remain.

Emirates Post to buy Indian company

Emirates Post will acquire an Indian cargo and courier company as it moves into new businesses before its proposed privatisation next year.

New business units are being created to handle logistics and remittances services before the UAE postal firm is put under a holding company, which will oversee its expansion abroad, officials told Gulf News yesterday.

“We are introducing new businesses into the overall structure of Emirates Post. Privatisation is the only way for us to run successful operations in the UAE and go into the global market. We cannot go into the global market as government,” Emirates Post Chairman and UAE Minister of Communications Sultan Saeed Al Mansouri said.
