GO! expands its European network to Switzerland

Swiss express carrier NES has joined the GO! European network and will represent the brand throughout the Alpine country as GO! Switzerland.

The German express and logistics group, whose full name is GO! General Overnight Service GmbH, said it would be using Niederbipp-based NES’s 160 vehicles, 10 depots nationwide and 50 employees to transport national and interantional parcels.

“As one of the leading and most important express services, NES AG is an ideal partner for us,” explained Ralf-Hans Dierks, CEO of GO! Germany.

“Using the same high quality standards and product range, we will expand the national and European express and document despatch and be able to multiply our parcel volume.”

Dierk said Switzerland bore “enormous potential” for GO! and its European network and that the company was planning to expand further its international product range.

“We will not only extend our European system, but also strengthen our position among the leaders on the express market”, he added.

Catalogues fuel online shopping boom

The popularity of catalogues is fuelling an online shopping boom across the UK with consumers spending an average of GBP609 each on goods online this year so far, Royal Mail research revealed today.

Three-fifths (61 per cent) of UK consumers have consulted a catalogue before making online purchases and three in four shoppers (83 per cent) regularly use catalogues before buying online.

The most popular online items according to the 4,000 adults surveyed are music products and downloadable tracks (71 per cent), followed by gifts (69 per cent) and electrical goods (62 per cent).

UPS and Poste Italiane reach deal on express international shipments

UPS and Poste Italiane today announced the completion of an agreement for UPS to carry the Italian postal service’s international express shipments.

The service is scheduled to start November 27 for the 14,000 post offices Poste Italiane operates across Italy.In addition, UPS is finalizing details to utilize the Poste Italiane network for its own pickup and final delivery in certain extended areas of the country.

This partnership with UPS is part of Poste Italiane’s strategy aimed at strengthening its position in the express courier domestic market. In addition, a more competitive and reliable service in the international segment offers great growth opportunities for the group and this is an important step in further improving the very positive results Poste Italiane has achieved to date. In the first six months of 2006, the group achieved an EBIT of 811 million (+43.6 per cent vs 2005) with a Net Result of 379 million (+72.6 per cent vs 2005).

Besides its core postal service, and thanks to its robust coverage of the entire country and its strong integration between its business units, the Poste Italiane Group now offers a vast range of integrated communication, logistics and financial products and services.

The UPS strategy calls for the creation of new growth opportunities for the company by forging alliances and partnerships around the world, including with national postal services.

UPS volume grows in third quarter, 1,200 jobs to be eliminated

United Parcel Service Inc. has credited a 5 percent spike in global small package volume for its increase in net income in the third quarter.
Atlanta-based UPS (NYSE: UPS) also announced a new five-year partnership with the Italian Post to deliver the Italian post office’s international express volume. Financial terms were not disclosed.

For the third quarter, UPS had net income of USD1.04 billion on USD11.7 billion in revenue, compared with net income of USD953 million on USD10.6 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2005. Earnings were 96 cents a share, compared with earnings of 86 cents a share in the third quarter of 2005.

Daily U.S. ground volume increased 3.6 percent in the third quarter, while average daily volume for Next Day Air rose 1 percent and deferred air volume climbed 3.4 percent. Total international package volume grew 19.9 percent.
“UPS is moving forward with confidence,” said Mike Eskew, UPS chairman and CEO. “Our small package business continues to show strength across all segments and we are taking the steps necessary to put our supply chain business on the right track after a disappointing performance.”

In other news, Reuters reports Thursday the UPS will cut 1,200 jobs from its freight forwarding division this quarter. This move will save the package shipper about USD100 million next year.

DHL's new European hub 'progressing well'

DHL has released a statement confirming that construction work at its European hub, which began at the start of 2006, is progressing well and is on schedule.

“The Leipzig/Halle hub will be a vital element within our company. Along with Hong Kong in Asia und Wilmington in the United States, it will be one of the three most important transfer locations in DHL’s global network,” Zumwinkel said. DHL plans to create 3,500 jobs by 2012.

A total of 400 DHL employees are already working at the evolving hub, where structural work is almost finished. The hub will consist of a 48,000 square-metre distribution centre and an approximately 23,000 square-metre hangar. Installation of the operational equipment is scheduled to begin soon. Costing more than *70 million, the Dutch company Vanderlande will install sorting technology in the next few months.

DHL is also expanding its flight operations at the Leipzig/Halle airport. The current air routes to and from Brussels, Cologne/Bonn, Warsaw, Kattowitz, Danzig, Nuremberg, Ostrau, Prague in the Czech Republic and East Midlands in England have been expanded to include Kiev. Copenhagen and Bergamo, in northern Italy, will be added as shipping airports on October 30, 2006. Following this, a total of 12 DHL planes will use the central German airport Monday through Friday.
