GLS puts new Eastern German depot into operation

GLS Germany has put its new EUR 5.1 million depot at Limbach-Oberfrohna, near Chemnitz in eastern Germany, into operation, increasing its capacity in the region close to the Czech border.

The 3,700 sqm parcel sorting centre, which replaces a smaller nearby site, is located on an 18,000 sqm plot of land close to the A4 motorway. Equipped with a modern parcel sorting system, the facility can handle some 20,000 shipments per day on average, and up to 25,000 parcels a day at peak times. Some 40 GLS employees and 65 drivers will work at and out of the depot, a 25% increase in jobs compared to the former site.

“Perfect transportation connections, more space and a modern technical installation – the depot fulfils all the conditions for reliable and secure shipment handling,” declared Klaus Conrad, Managing Director of GLS Germany.

U.S. FedEx signs airport lease, UPS on the way

FedEx Corp. should be starting work on its new package-sorting center near Charlotte County Airport within the next four to six weeks — and UPS won’t be far behind in expanding its airport facility.

Last week, a developer working for FedEx signed a ground lease with the airport for 4.8 acres on Golf Course Boulevard, according to Gary Quill, airport executive director. FedEx then immediately signed a lease for the 35,000-square-foot building with the developer, Orlando-based Regional Development.

In a related development, UPS has asked the Charlotte County Airport Authority to increase its ground lease on Challenger Boulevard from 2.9 to 6.5 acres for a major expansion of the distribution center it currently operates on the site.

Don Lee, District 2 airport commissioner, said UPS’s request will be discussed at Thursday’s regular Airport Authority meeting. He anticipated no objections — indeed, UPS’s expansion has been anticipated for some time, although it’s been running on a little slower track than the FedEx deal.

The privately-owned company put a new Napoli Centro depot into operation at the start of September. The facility, located about 10 km from the city centre, covers a surface of 2,600 sqm and is equipped with an automatic sorting system. Bartolini said that the new branch would enable it to further improve its service quality for Naples and the northern part of the surrounding province.

On Sicily, Bartolini also opened a new depot called Catania Centro in early September to improve coverage of the local area. Located about 15 km from the city, it covers a surface of about 1,500 sqm and it is equipped with an automatic sorting system.

The company has also put into service a major new depot at Palmanova, between Udine and Triest in northeast Italy, in mid-July. Covering 8,000 sqm, the facility serves the province of Gorizia and part of Udine, and is strategically located close to the A4 and A23 motorways.
