FedEx hopeful of pilot deal soon

FedEx Corp is hopeful of a successful conclusion to talks with its pilots’ union after more than two years without a deal, a top executive said on Wednesday. “We think we have put together a good package for the pilots,” corporate vice president for strategic financial planning and analysis James Hudson told Reuters on the sidelines of a transportation conference organized by investment bank Bear Stearns in New York. “We are hopeful we will be able to reach an agreement that will be fair to the pilots, their families, our customers, our company and our shareholders,” he added. FedEx and the union representing its 4,700 pilots are due to start federally mediated talks next week. Negotiations on a new contract began in March 2004.

DHL to quit Myanmar joint venture

Deutsche Post AG’s DHL affiliate will end its joint venture with an entity linked to Myanmar’s military dictatorship when the current contract expires at the end of 2006, the Burma Campaign UK said. DHL’s partner in Myanmar is the regime-owned company Myanma Post and Telecomms. The two companies started cooperating in Jan 1998, the Campaign said in a statement. No financial details were reported. ‘This is a welcome but long overdue move by DHL,’ said Yvette Mahon, director of Burma Campaign UK. In 2002 the regime expelled Federal Express, UPS and TNT and other smaller parcel carries, leaving DHL the sector’s sole player in the country. None of the other companies operated joint ventures.
