Jobs boost as TNT UK engages extra numbers

TNT is providing a further jobs boost to the North East with news of an additional 40 vacancies at the company’s recently opened GB4.5 million national customer contact centre at Team Valley near Gateshead. TNT Express Services moved into the new facility at Maingate House at the back end of last year and now expect to have a full complement of 240 employees by the end of 2006.

Deutsche Post World Net builds international research center

Deutsche Post World Net announced today the launch of research and development initiatives to be carried out in the new DHL Innovation Center. Located near Bonn, Germany, the center supports the development of cutting edge innovations in the field of global logistics, including the mail and express segments. “The DHL Innovation Center allows us to develop tomorrow’s solutions for our customers today,” said Frank Appel, Board Member responsible for Deutsche Post World Net’s Global Business Services, at Wednesday’s topping-out ceremony. He announced that, together with experts from DHL, specialists from IBM, Intel, Philips and SAP would research innovations covering the entire logistics chain. These companies have recently joined forces in the DHL Innovation Initiative.

Corriere Executive re-brands to GLS

The GLS subsidiary in Italy has re-branded from its Italian name of Corriere Executive to GLS in the latest move towards establishing the group name in all European subsidiaries. The GLS brand, which was already partly used by the Italian company during a co-branding phase following its acquisition by the Royal Mail subsidiary in 2001, replaced the Executive logo and symbol on the company’s vans, driver uniforms, office signs and corporate publications with effect from April 1. The formal company name was already GLS Italy.

DHL kicks off China priority strategy

DHL announced its China Priority strategy in Beijing, a move coming as the country, with a growth rate of 50-60% in 2004, has become the fastest-growing market among DHL’s global networks. Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), parent company of DHL, will further elevate DHL’s capacity in China through heavier investments, revealed DPWN chairman Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel. Under the strategy, DHL-Sinotrans, its China joint venture, will inject up to USD 24 million in constructing the DHL-Sinotrans building as one of several big steps, bringing DHL’s total investment in the Greater China region to more than USD 900 million.

Indian govt may act on illegal courier companies

The government is contemplating action against private courier companies for bringing international post in the country illegally and delivering them as domestic post, depriving the Department of Post of terminal dues. According to senior officials in the Department of Posts, the courier companies have been routing international posts illegally as domestic ones, creating a similar situation to one existing in telecom sector in the internal call segment. Although DoP officials declined to give any estimates of illegal posts entering the country, informed sources said it could run between Rs 10 billion (USD221 million) to Rs 15 billion.
