Multi-million pound deal marks TNT UK new arrival

TNT Document Services has secured a multi-million pound five-year contract extension from Land Registry. The new division – TNT Document Services, formerly known as Cendris UK – part of TNT Express Specialist Services (TESS), deals with transactional print, scanning, offshore data capture, data management and digital archiving. TNT Document Services has enjoyed a long-standing commercial partnership with Land Registry that has already encompassed the electronic scanning of 18 million property title plans in England and Wales and 16 million supporting documents and 90 million items. The latest five-year agreement was sealed at a contract signing ceremony attended by the Land Registry’s Chief Procurement Officer, Tim Leaver and Bob Black, Chief Operating Officer of TNT Express Services UK, at Land Registry Head Office in Lincoln Inn Fields, London.

UPS in position to buy

UPS is in a position to make an “extremely large” acquisition if it finds a deal that makes strategic sense, said Scott Davis, chief financial officer.
The comments revived long-standing speculation that UPS could bid for TNT, the Dutch post group, which has large package delivery operations in Europe and Asia. UPS is considered a potential buyer of TNT’s logistics division, which the group plans to auction this year, but some analysts believe the parcel business could also be sold. Mr Davis gave no clues about possible targets but cited the company’s Dollars 1.9bn of free cash flow in the first quarter as evidence that UPS had the financial strength to make a big deal. The comments came as UPS announced a 10.5 per cent increase in first-quarter net profits to Dollars 975m, driven by surging international shipments.

DHL-Transmile tie up to deliver consignments faster to US from India

Express services provider DHL today announced a tie-up with Malaysia-based air express operator Transmile, which will help it deliver consignments from south India to the US in just two days. The company will deliver consignments from Bangalore, Chennai and other key south Indian markets to the US in two days, a company statement said here. DHL’s tie-up with Transmile would route its consignments from Chennai and Bangalore to its Asia Pacific hub – Hong Kong and it would be further re-directed to its other centres for distribution in east and west coast of the US, it said, adding this route would save time of more than a day for delivering consignments.

Dutch TNT considers new cost-saving programme

TNT is condidering a new cost-saving programme, company CEO Peter Bakker told the annual shareholders meeting on April 20, 2006. TNT has been restructuring its 2001 Masterplan Costs Flexibility programme since 2003, which has led to cost-savings of about 234 mln euro (USD288.3 mln). Though the company’s total cost savings are estimated to stand at 370 mln euro (UD455.8 mln) by 2013, TNT aims to implement a new programme that will further its savings.

TNT's contingent tax liability reduces significantly

TNT N.V. today announced that as a result of further negotiations with various tax authorities, the estimated realistic range of its contingent tax liability has reduced from between EUR150 million and EUR550 million, as disclosed in TNT’s annual report for 2005, to between EUR100 million and EUR250 million. This range includes potential penalties and interest. Our tax positions have been and are supported by strong specialist external advice. In connection with the further negotiations mentioned above, TNT expects to take an additional tax charge in the second quarter of 2006 that is not expected to be significant to the Group.
