DHL to invest USD2.0 mln in Colombia 2006

DHL Global Forwarding Colombia plans to invest around USD2.0 mln (1.67 mln euro) in improvement of its services in 2006, the company’s manager, Alvaro Mancilla, said on February 19, 2006. DHL will invest the sum mainly for expansion of its cargo platforms in the city of Cali and along the Colombian Atlantic coast. The Colombian company exported 42,000 tonnes of cargo and imported 123,000 tonnes in 2005, and its sales totalled UD60 mln (50.2 mln euro).

Fedex chooses Philippines for planned backroom office

Federal Express (FedEx) has chosen the Philippines as the site for a planned regional hub that will handle the logistics firm’s Asia Pacific business process operations (BPO) and the firm is now scouting for an area in Manila, the BusinessWorld newspaper reported, citing a FedEx statement. The report said FedEx will set up the backroom office after it closes its regional air trans-shipment hub at the Subic Freeport Zone in the province of Zambales in Dec 2008.

Irish wing of DHL reports 90% rise in profit

DHL Ireland has reported an increase of over 90 per cent in pre-tax profits as international business activity from Ireland continues to increase. DHL Holdings (Ireland) posted a turnover of EUR70 million in the year ended 2004, up from EUR65 million in the previous period. DHL, which faces strong US competition from the likes of FedEx and UPS, is now owned by Deutsche Post. It posted a pre-tax profit of EUR5 million in the year under review, up from EUR2.6 million in the equivalent period in 2003. After tax was paid the company was left with a profit of EUR4.3 million, up from EUR2.4 million. The scale of the company’s activities is illustrated by the company’s total current assets of EUR20.9 million.

TNT to delist from the London Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange

TNT N.V. today announced it intends to delist from the London and Frankfurt stock exchanges. The costs for these listings are not justified by the low trading volume in TNT shares at both stock exchanges. The expected date for the cancellation of the listing on the London Stock Exchange will be on or about 21 March 2006 and for the Frankfurt Stock Exchange before the end of May 2006. TNT shares will remain listed at Euronext Amsterdam N.V. and the New York Stock Exchange.

Deutsche Post to offload niche courier operation

Logistics company Exel, which was last year taken over by the German mail giant Deutsche Post for pounds 3.8 billion, has put its niche courier business Marken on the block for an estimated pounds 250m. It is understood that the investment bank UBS has been appointed to sell Marken. Marken provides specialist courier services to the medical, pharmaceutical, media, professional, fashion and high technology industries. Sources said that a number of UK-based private equity firms such as PPM, Bridgepoint, Electra and 3i, were interested in acquiring the business. It is understood there could also be trade buyers.
