Hungary’s express air delivery market to double in under five years

Hungary’s market for international express air deliveries is expected to be worth about EUR 70m this year, up from EUR 62m in 2004, according to a study by Deutsche Post, which owns express delivery service DHL Express Magyarorszag. The study estimates the market for international express air deliveries will grow further to EUR 100m in 2008, and to EUR 150m in 2010, more than doubling in size over five years. According to the study, DHL Express Magyarorszag is leader on the international express air delivery market, with a 36pc share, followed by TNT Express Worldwide Hungary with 31pc, the Hungarian unit of UPS with 23pc, FedEx, which has no Hungarian unit, with 9pc, and the Hungarian post Magyar Posta with 2pc.

DHL relocates, consolidates operations in Los Angeles

DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, part of the logistics division of DHL, announced today it has relocated and consolidated its three Los Angeles, Calif.-area operations into a single facility, an important step in effectively meeting customer needs during the peak shipping seasons and managing the rapid long-term growth of trans-Pacific import volumes. Located in Redondo Beach, Calif. near the Port of Long Beach and Los Angeles International Airport, the 200,000 square foot facility houses DHL Danzas Air & Ocean’s Los Angeles gateway operations; air, ocean and U.S. domestic services; customs brokerage, warehousing and Customer Program Management activities. Previously, the company’s Los Angeles operations occupied three buildings located several miles apart.

DHL to Invest USD50m in development of business in Russia

DHL is going to invest USD50 million in development of its business in Russia. According to General Director of DHL in the CIS, Frank-Eaves Underer, the Russian market is one of the most promising and rapidly growing in the world. Now its capacity is estimated at USD400 million and its annual growth exceeds 30percent. Along with this, Russia is the only country in the world where companies of the “big four” (DHL, FedEx, UPS and TNT) control less than a half of the market. For example, in the European Union countries their aggregate share approaches 80percent. According to analysts, not more than five large companies specializing in express delivery and logistics will remain in Europe in the future.

DHL to open 350 service points in Netherlands 2006

DHL will open 350 service points in the Netherlands in January 2006.

These are manned counters, mainly in supermarkets, train stations and shops, where private clients and companies can bring and take packages.

DHL signed already a contract with Dutch video chain Videoland for the placement of service points. Furthermore, agreements will be reached with retailers such as bakers, animal shops and other small companies. DHL has service points in seven European countries, including England, Sweden, Spain and Italy. DHL plans to invest over 1.0 bln euro (USD1.2 bln) over the coming years in Europe, including in infrastructure, IT development and customer services. DHL plans to expand its network to 30,000 customer contact points by the end of 2008. A year before that, there will be some 20,000 contact points.

DHL to merge Hungarian units

Express delivery company DHL will merge its two units in Hungary next year, DHL Express Magyarorszag marketing manager Joseph Borocz said.

The two units, DHL Express Magyarorszag and DHL Nemzetkozi es Logisztikai, have operated in unison since 2002, when Deutsche Post World Net acquired 100pc of DHL.

DHL Express Magyarorszag had revenue of HUF 17.9bn in 2004. This year the company expects revenue of HUF 19.3bn, and it targets revenue of HUF 20.3bn in 2006. DHL Magyarorszag made 1.3m deliveries in 2004. It expects to make 1.4m this year and 2m in 2006.

DHL Express Magyarorszag started making deliveries outside of Hungary a year ago. Mr Borocz noted that, while just four other companies offer express delivery outside of Hungary — TNT, UPS, FedEx and Magyar Posta — there are hundreds of smaller companies which compete on the market for deliveries inside Hungary.
