Royal Mail can deliver a boost for home shopping

Home shopping companies should do well out of changes to the Royal Mail’s structure because it will lower the cost of posting catalogues, says broker Numis, which has given its stamp of approval to Findel and N Brown. Under the new tariff system, which comes into effect in September next year, it is expected that posting smaller, heavier items will be cheaper while mailing costs for large but light items will rise. Although the cost of sending out orders to customers is not expected to change significantly, Numis says the lower cost of sending out catalogues that should result from the changes is a boon for home shopping companies.

UPS orders eight Boeing 747-400 freighters

As part of its on-going effort to accommodate strong international volume growth, UPS today announced a firm order for eight new Boeing 747-400 freighters from Boeing Co. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Deliveries of the 747-400’s will begin in June 2007 and run through 2008. UPS has selected General Electric to provide engines for the new aircraft. “These Boeing 747-400 freighters will allow UPS to smoothly increase capacity on its most important international ‘trunk’ routes connecting Asia, Europe and North America,” said Bob Lekites, UPS vice president of airline and international operations.

Amtrak acquires Nightspeed

Amtrak Express Parcels Ltd has today announced that it has acquired the business and assets of Nightspeed Services Ltd for an undisclosed sum. Nightspeed has been experiencing financial difficulties in recent months and went into administration earlier today. Amtrak had been in discussion with Nightspeed as one of a number of acquisition targets and was able to move quickly to bring certainty to the company and over 900 staff.

Interparcel takes off on the web

Interparcel, an online firm offering discounted parcels services with most of the leading international carriers, says it has taken 50,000 orders in its first eight months of trading. “Business is booming,” says director Mark Walters. He says that more than half of transactions are with businesses, rather than private mailings. Walters and managing director Alan Ruston, an information technology specialist, formed the business after leaving mailing house Pharos International, where they had helped develop a similar system. Interparcel is based near Gatwick.
