UPS launches Trade Direct Air for Brazilian companies

Express delivery service provider UPS will launch in the second half of 2005 the Trade Direct Air (TDA), a new air cargo service with support for Brazilian companies in the United States. UPS, active in Brazil for 10 years, has invested USD7mil in the country. In more than one year the Brazilian subsidiary doubled its transportation capacity from 28 – 30 m tons 55 – 60 m tons.

Amtrak announces largest UK next-day home delivery contract

Amtrak Express Parcels has won a £25 million, five-year home delivery contract with home-shopping company Kleeneze. Amtrak will provide next-day deliveries across the UK to boost services to the Kleeneze sales network that employs 14,000 home-based distributors who supply customers locally. The contract is thought to be the largest next day home delivery contract ever placed and further strengthens Amtrak’s position as the home delivery specialist.

Yamato Transport to start int’l delivery service for printed matter

Yamato Transport Co. will start a new service for sending printed matter, such as magazines and catalogues, from Japan to overseas in the same delivery time but at a cheaper rate compared with Japan Post, company officials said Tuesday.

Yamato Transport will offer the new service at 70 locations across the nation from July 1, eventually increasing its availability to about 3,000 places, the officials said.

The company will not handle individual letters addressed to specific persons.

Under the new service, delivery will take four to 14 days, almost the same as that of Japan Post, the public corporation in charge of postal services, the officials said.

Yamato Transport will assign the delivery at overseas destinations to local mail service providers, they said.

Postkantoren BV and TNT Logistics sign contract

Postkantoren B.V. and TNT Benelux & Multi Country Logistics have signed a new contract. Spearhead of the contract is the consolidation of various product flows at the TNT site in Maarssen, the Netherlands. Postkantoren B.V. is a joint venture between TNT N.V. and ING N.V. The company owns the Bruna chain of stores. Postkantoren has 800 sites in the Netherlands, 500 of which are franchised postal agents and 300 self-owned.
Consumers are offered a wide range of products, from cinema vouchers, moped licences and lottery tickets to fishing permits and bus and tram cards. Postkantoren last year decided to assign these products to three main logistics flows.

TNT/Royal Mail: GLS sale would suit both sides

TNT has expressed interest in acquiring Royal Mail’s European parcel unit GLS Holding, among other global targets, to expand its express delivery network and increase market share. Although Royal Mail has yet to make a comment, a possible sell-off could work well with the group’s plans for semi-privatization.

According to the German magazine WirtschaftsWoche, TNT may be planning a series of acquisitions, one of which could be Royal Mail’s subsidiary General Logistics Systems (GLS), CEO Peter Bakker said in an interview.
