German DPWN to face competition from Direkt Express

Deutsche Post World Net AG will face competition from Direkt Express in the market for collecting, sorting and franking commercial letters that weigh less than 100 grammes starting next month, Focus Online reported. A German court decision opened the market for such letters earlier this month. ‘We will deliver 120,000 mailings per day,’ Direkt Express’s chief executive Edip Tuerkoglu said. Direkt Express will be Deutsche Post’s first competitor in this market.

UPS adds slower US business mail service for lower rate

United Parcel Service business mail services unit Mail Innovations unveiled an integrated suite of mailing services that includes a new option to send non-urgent mail at a lower rate in exchange for less speedy delivery.
Called UPS Mail Logic, the service includes mail pickup, transport and processing to the U.S. Postal Service or overseas. For mail in the United States, UPS Mail Logic delivers at First-Class mail speeds plus one day.

Customers also can choose UPS Mail Logic Saver, which delivers mail in an average of six days. Mail sent with UPS Mail Logic Saver qualifies for a lower per-piece rate.

Domestically, UPS Mail Innovations typically handles mail pieces weighing less than 1 pound, including flats, bound printed matter, including catalogs and lightweight products such as CDs or books. Internationally, UPS Mail Innovations handles mail of all weights.

Services, will be leaving the Group on 30 September 2005, for health reasons.
His role, overseeing the Express, International and HomeServe business units and
Network Services, will be assumed by Paul Carvell, Chief Executive.

DHL Express invests Eur 4.2 mln in new French Flevy site

International courier DHL Express, a subsidiary of German postal services provider Deutsche Post, has started the construction of its new site in Flevy, Moselle department, north eastern France, it was reported on May 3, 2005.

DHL has invested a total 4.2 mln euro (USD 5.39 mln), including for the land, in this new site, which will have a staff of some 100 employees. The new site should become operational as of September 1, 2005. The activities in the Flevy site will cover all the services offered by DHL including messages, express and road shipment in a unique site covering 27,500 sq m, where at first some 4,000 sq m, dedicated to loading platforms and 1,000 sq m to offices, will be set up. DHL has five other sites across the Moselle department.

DHL bags Asian freight award

DHL was named the Best Express Operator at the 2005 Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards in Singapore last month.

The company’s general manager (Pacific Islands), Paul Roper said they were delighted to have been recognised as leaders in the express business.

“This accolade is further vindication that the investments we are making in our infrastructure locally in Fiji and throughout Asia are translating into a real competitive advantage for our customers,” Mr Roper said.

DHL Express in Fiji is currently renovating a 1000square metre warehouse and office facility in Raiwaqa.

“We will be moving into our new facility in Suva at the end of June,” Mr Roper said.

“Once we have completed this project we will be able to offer Fiji a complete “One Stop Shop” freight centre.
