Target Express on road to GBP 250 m float

Directors at Warrington parcel firm Target Express are mulling a possible flotation of the business in a move that could value it up to GBP250m.

It is understood the firm’s venture capital investor 3i, which backed a management buyout in 2000, is now keen to exit the firm.

Target Express has appointed advisers Hawkpoint to look at its future and a possible sale is also believed to be high on the list of options.

Sources close to Target Express, confirmed that 3i, which owns 70 per cent of the business, is looking for an exit.

In a statement, chairman David Hoare said: “We are profitable and very cash generative so there is no need to do anything from a funding standpoint. But we always look at ways to increase our business and we will look at the whole range of options.”

Teamsters target DHL

As it battles for a larger share of express shipping in the United States, DHL is getting the attention of more than just shippers and competitors. The express giant is facing an aggressive effort by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union to organize the company’s independent delivery workforce. Started in force late last summer, the union campaign has recruited about 1,500 employees at DHL’s independent cartage contractors to the union ranks, said Rebecca Hanscom, national campaign coordinator for the DHL system at the Teamsters. That is just a fraction of the 10,000 independent delivery agents at DHL, but the union is mounting a national and grassroots campaign to recruit the balance. The objective is to recruit members at the local level, forge regional agreements and eventually press for a master contract covering all DHL employees.

DHL builds B2B network with centre in North UK

DHL Global Mail is ramping up its national business-to-business (B2B) network, as part of its assault on the deregulated postal market.

The company is opening a mail centre in Warrington, Cheshire – the first since DHL’s acquisition of business mail specialist Smartmail International last year.

Smartmail already provides London regions with a B2B collection and delivery service. The northern centre’s unveiling marks its full integration into DHL.

DHL says the opening represents a major step in its plan to create a national network to rival Royal Mail within the next 18 months.

John Ivers, UK managing director of DHL Global, comments: “The fundamental factor missing in today’s mail service is reliability. By building our own network, we have 100 per cent control over this.”

Gregor McGregor, chief executive of Postwatch, states: “Customers want regular, reliable postal services, and this new service hits the mark.”
