DHL UAE wins Hitachi data systems logistics contract

Under the contract, DHL UAE takes bulk receipt of spare parts from HDS in The Netherlands, flies them into its express logistics centre in Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZA) where they are stored ready for express despatch to regional distributors and customers on demand.

‘DHL was selected after meeting our requirement for high service levels and after demonstrating its international and regional experience on other HDS operations,’ said Henk Witteman European Spare Parts Logistics Manager, HDS.

DHL UAE, the Emirates’ leading air express and logistics provider, has won a fiercely contested Middle East logistics solutions contract from leading storage solutions provider Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Limited.

‘Other determining factors included the proximity of its DAFZA facility to Dubai International Airport thereby securing speedy turnaround when orders for spares are placed, or a ‘repair and return’ service is needed.’

DHL opens export facility at Sydney Airport

US-based logistics company DHL today opened a USD20 million export facility at Sydney Airport, as it anticipates further free trade agreements between Australia and its trading partners.

The air express cargo facility, dubbed Oceania Hub, is the largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific region, with the capacity to move over 90,000 kilograms of freight each day.

DHL said it was hoping to benefit from increased international trade following Australia’s free trade agreement with the US, as well an expected deal with the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“Recognising the potential for further growth, DHL has implemented a business strategy that has focused on capacity building,” DHL Express regional director Gary Edstein said.

Major mover on the road less travelled – interview with head of TNTs Express Road Network

When a fourth Boeing 737 joined his fleet last year, Niky Terzakis, MD of TNT Airways, told IFW it would enable the whole of Europe to be connected at speed. He chose Portugal to Finland as the longest possible journey across the continent, and one that most road operators would think twice about undertaking.
By genuine coincidence, however, one of the first packages I studied during a recent evening tour of TNT’s Express Road Network (ERN) hub in Duiven, near Arnhem, was a batch of Tyco wiring harnesses which had begun their journey in Lisbon on 15 February. Two nights later, they had reached Arnhem via Benavente in Spain, one of the network’s 14 sub-hubs. In another two days they would arrive at their final destination of Turku, either on a direct trailer or via an “overspill” trunker through the Helsingborg sub-hub.
