Seur: plain sailing

Seur’s year-on-year increase was primarily driven by the international business, which has traditionally been the company’s Achilles’ heel. Last year’s launch of a partnership with the French GeoPost has enabled Seur to improve this part of the business almost immediately with the upward trend likely to continue in 2005.

Leading Spanish express and courier company Seur has posted its 2004 financial results, although it only stated and commented upon total sales as the company is not listed on the stock market and is therefore not obliged to release complete financial statements.

The company reported revenues of E543 million, an 8.7% increase on the previous year’s figure. Seur’s outgoing president, Mr Ramon Mayo, emphasized the significant growth in international business, with sales from this segment almost doubling last year’s figures, and now representing 8% of total revenues at E43.4 million.

Japan Post gaining partners for parcel delivery service

Ministop Co. announced on March 1 that it will begin handling Japan Post's Yu-Pack parcel delivery service at its 1,684 convenience stores, becoming the second convenience-store operator to do so following Lawson Inc.

By signing up Ministop to handle the Yu-Pack drop-off service at all locations, Japan Post has succeeded in converting another convenience store operator that had been doing business with parcel delivery pioneer Yamato Transport Co.

Ministop currently conducts a similar service for Yamato, but it is expected to switch to Yu-Pack because the leading door-to-door parcel delivery firm does not allow Ministop and other business partners to offer rival services.

Japan’s Sagawa Express to set up cargo airline in tie-up with JAL

Sagawa Express Co, one of Japan’s big four transport firms, will set up a new cargo airline in April in a tie-up with Japan Airlines Corp (JAL), the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, quoting company sources.

The planned new venture, the first fully-fledged cargo airline in Japan in 15 years, will start operations in March next year, it said.

The firm aims to offer cargo transport services at prices 20-50 pct lower than those of its rivals — Yamato Transport Co and Nippon Express Co — using its own planes, the business daily said.

The firm, to be capitalized at 5 bln yen, will be owned 50 pct by Sagawa Express, which is asking major trading houses, like Mitsubishi Corp and Mitsui and Co, as well as JAL, to hold the remaining stakes in the venture, it said.
