DHL to build 10.5 Mln Euro logistics platform in Bilbao

DHL will invest 10.5 mln euro (USD13.6 mln) in a new logistic platform at the Loiu airport in Bilbao, Vizcaya province, northern Spain, it was reported on February 4, 2005.

The new platform will spread over 18,000 sq m of which 6,200 storage area and 1,275 office area. The platform will include 94 points for loading and unloading. The platform will be fully automated. DHL will install a system with a capacity to handle 4,500 parcels an hour. The construction works are scheduled to begin at the end of 2005. The new platform will serve DHL operations in the Vizcaya province.

German Saxony-Anhalt to invest 67 mln Euro to help DHL project

The state government of the northern German state of Saxony-Anhalt will invest 67 mln euro (USD86 mln) to support German-based global courier firm DHL’s project to build an air freight logistics centre at the Leipzig-Halle airport, the state transport minister Karl-Heinz Daehre said on January 3, 2005. The Saxony-Anhalt government will invest in a new runway at the Leipzig-Halle airport, and will provide land for the logistics centre. DHL’s decision to move its logistics centre to the Leipzig region is important not only for the city, but will also positively affect the labour markets of the states of Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia, Daehre said.

Asia-Pacific region is engine of growth for DHL – CEO

The Asia-Pacific region, led by China and India, has emerged as the engine of growth for German DHL, said Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman and chief executive of DHL’s parent firm, Deutsche Post World Net. Zumwinkel told a press briefing during a visit here that the region’s share of DHL’s global revenues is expected to rise to nearly 20 pct by 2010 from 11 pct in 2003. DHL is set to ride on projected robust growth in world trade as tariff and non-tariff barriers are removed and governments and companies increasingly outsource segments of their businesses such as logistics, Zumwinkel said. ‘Asia for our company is the engine of growth,’ he said. ‘Here is where the topline growth comes from.’ He said Asia currently had the fastest growth rates for the company compared with the European and US markets.

DHL and Airbus join forces

Airbus (EADS Group) has selected DHL Solutions to supply logistics services related to the manufacture of wing struts and the supply of maintenance kits and spare parts, and the assembly of the future A380 “superjumbo”.

The goal is to optimise the supply of spare parts to airline companies and the Airbus production line in Toulouse using a logistics system based on the proximity of storage and assembly facilities.

Deutsche Post prepares to transfer European logistics centre from Brussels to Leipzig

Deutsche Post has overcome the final obstacle to transferring its European logistics centre from Brussels to Leipzig. DHL, the express and logistics subsidiary of the group, has concluded negotiations with Belgian trade unions regarding its current hub at Brussels airport, where the company has agreed to guarantee the preservation of jobs until April 2008. In exchange, staff have promised that there will be no disruptions to operations. DHL is planning to invest 300m euros in Leipzig, where the airport will be able to remain in operation 24 hours a day, unlike in Brussels. The company is to create around 3,500 jobs by 2012, and it is thought that a further 7,000 jobs could be created in the area.
