UK Exel shares rise on takeover talk

Shares in British logistics provider Exel closed up 9 percent at a two-and-a-half year high on Tuesday on speculation it is the target of a takeover bid. The BBC reported that industry speculation has focused on United Parcel Services as the most likely bidder. DHL, a unit of Germany’s Deutsche Post, and finance firm GE Capital have also been prominently mentioned. At Tuesday’s market close, Exel was valued at USD6.3 billion. Exel employs 109,000 people in more than 120 countries and has itself been active in the consolidation of the logistics sector, buying UK firm Tibbett & Britten last August.

DHL Bahrain launches new time-definite express delivery services

DHL Bahrain, part of global courier company DHL Express Worldwide, launched on February 1, 2005 a number of new time-definite express delivery services in the Kingdom.

The new services provide more convenience and flexibility for the customers, allowing them to pre-arrange the exact time for their deliveries, officials said. The new services include the StartDay Express service, which allows express door-to-door deliveries by 0900 local time and the MidDay Express service for express door-to-door deliveries by 1200 local time. As part of the new services, customers are able to choose between deliveries on the next day or on the second day and can also benefit from express services for heavy shipments.

UPS and Canadian Union of Postal Workers begin court battle

A court battle between American courier giant UPS and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers began in Ontario last Monday after UPS accused Canada Post of unfairly violating Chapter 11 of NAFTA. This chapter allows corporations to seek compensation when government policies are deemed to harm their businesses. According to UPS, the fact that Canada Post is publicly funded gives it an unfair advantage over private delivery companies.

DHL darting into a growing market

DHL announced recently that it is looking to acquire a further 20% stake in Blue Dart Express, of which it currently owns 68%. The move is indicative of DHL’s faith in the Asia-Pacific region and is one of numerous international mergers and acquisitions of late in the logistics industry. The acquisition makes DHL the first international express and logistics company to offer its own domestic and international services in India. Through the acquisition of a majority stake in Blue Dart, India’s largest courier firm, DHL will have access to an extensive network covering 13,700 locations, warehouses at 14 locations and 2,717 delivery vehicles. The move confirms the group’s ambitions for the Asia-Pacific region, which is attracting global express and logistics operators due to the potential in the area’s growing economies. DHL is investing in China and will also set up a joint venture with New Zealand Post.
