However, for the home parcel delivery business, the USPS has been at the forefront of innovation as it has coped with new competition and critical changes in the behavior of its customers. The millions of consumers who receive packages at their homes each year may not see it, but the residential delivery process has been completely transformed over the last five years, and the USPS is at the heart of it.

DHL launches program in US with independent shipping stores

DHL today announced the launch of a new nationwide program with independent mail and parcel centers. Under DHL’s new Preferred Provider Program, participating retail shipping stores will adopt DHL as their preferred transportation provider for express delivery and shipping services, and promote DHL services to their customers.

Already more than 1,200 independent retail mail and parcel centers have signed up to participate in the program, the latest initiative launched by DHL as part of an ongoing commitment to better serve consumers and businesses throughout the country.

GM’s Holden renews and expands partnership with TPG in Australia

TPG, through its division TNT Logistics, has signed an agreement for the renewal and expansion of its contract for logistics services with Holden, the General Motors automotive manufacturer in Australia. TNT Logistics Australia will continue, for another three years, as the Lead Logistics Provider for General Motor’s aftermarket service parts division, Holden Service Parts Operation (HSPO). The activities include inbound transport from 500 domestic suppliers, national outbound transport of stock and emergency orders to over 350 dealers. Besides services already provided through the contract, TNT Logistics will now handle packaging as an additional service. The operations will be conducted in a purpose built logistics warehouse.

FedEx Express opens China region headquarters in Shanghai

FedEx Express formally opened its China region headquarters in Shanghai on November 17, 2004 to integrate its all business in the country under uniform management.

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation of the US, has stressed for times that it has no plan to operate the express business in China solely. However, the establishment of the new regional headquarters is likely a sign that FedEx Express will take more aggressive action in China, especially when the Chinese government will fully open up its logistics market to foreigners. According to China’s Commitments to the World Trade Organisation member, no foreign investors that are allowed to operate wholly owned logistics company in China until December 11, 2005. At present, the foreigner has to enter the market by setting up a Sino-foreign joint venture and is forbidden to gain a controlling stake in it.
