DHL France completes first phase of restructuring programme

DHL France, the subsidiary of DHL the transport and logistics division of German Postal Services operator Deutsche Post, has completed the first phase of its restructuring programme. As of 1 January 2005 the company will consist of only four legal structures, compared with 13 previously. These will include a holding company with the name DHL and three subsidiaries, DHL Solutions, DHL Express France and DHL Danzas Air & Ocean. The changes are to be introduced with retroactive effect from 1 January 2004.

NZ courier firm ready for new competitors

An increasing number of express parcels are whizzing around New Zealand’s buoyant economy, generating strong profit growth for newly listed courier group Freightways. The main competitor to NZ Post yesterday unveiled a better-than-expected 42 per cent rise in net profit for the first four months of the financial year. Freightways shares surged 15 cents, or 6%, to a record 285, nearly double its float price of 160 set before it listed last September. Chairman Wayne Boyd told the group’s annual meeting economic conditions were favourable and trading had been consistently strong. Freightways’ existing customers were increasing volumes and its three courier brands — New Zealand Couriers, Post Haste and Castle Parcels — were winning market share from NZ Post.

TPG and unions agree new collective labour agreement

TPG, the largest private sector employer in the Netherlands, and the negotiators for the trade unions ABVAKABO FNV, BVPP, CNV Publieke Zaak and VPP have reached an agreement on a new collective labour agreement. This collective labour agreement has a term of one year (1 May 2004 through to 1 May 2005) and covers around 65,000 employees of TPG in the Netherlands.

French parcel service on block

The French state railway company, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français, said Wednesday, Nov. 24, it was inviting bids from logistics operators for wholly owned parcel delivery service Sernam SA. The Paris-based train operator said its 44%-owned logistics company, Géodis SA, intended to bid, and that accordingly, Géodis executive chairman Pierre Blayau was being suspended from the SNCF board. The auction is the latest step in the consolidation of European logistics businesses. The seller would not say which investment bank is organizing the auction. SNCF was emphatic that it aimed to find an industrial buyer rather than a private equity firm to acquire Sernam.
