FedEx will raise US rates by 4.6%

FedEx Corp has announced plans to charge higher rates for air and ground shipments, indicating a change in the company’s method for passing along high fuel expenses to clients and strong demand in the freight market. The cost of an average air shipment in the US through FedEx will go up by 4.6% on January 3. Earlier this year, the company raised rates by 2.5% for the same items.

DHL boss out on US loss

Deutsche Post World Net ousted the head of its DHL Worldwide unit over the weekend after forecasting larger-than-expected losses in the United States. The German mail, express and logistics group said Uwe Doerken will be replaced by John Mullen on the company’s management board. Mullen will run DHL Express Americas, which includes Airborne Express of the US and Loomis of Canada, as well as DHL Express Asia Pacific and Emerging Markets. Deutsche Post said last week its US operations may post a loss as high of more than UDS640 million in 2004 compared to an earlier estimate of around USD250 million as it boosts spending on marketing and ground infrastructure. It said it won’t break even in the US until 2006, a year later than expected.

Secure parcel carrier wins a million pounds of national and regional government contracts

Nightspeed Secure Worldwide Express, based in Tipton, has launched GOVMAIL in partnership with the Government Car and Despatch Agency (GCDA) which provides secure inter departmental same day delivery and collection service for the Government and wider public sector. The independently owned company was awarded ‘UK Secure Parcel Carrier of the Year’ for three years running by its industry trade body, the Institute of Transport Management. Nightspeed Secure Worldwide Express, originally part of Group 4 security, has signed a ten year public private partnership deal which will be dedicated to secure parcel transit for the Government. As part of the overall contract, new regional account wins include NHS logistics, The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and the Home Office as well as Northamptonshire Police, the National Assembly for Wales, Her Majesty’s Prison Wormwood Scrubs, the West Country Ambulance Service, English Heritage, and the DVLA.

DHL commits Euro 128 million for investment in domestic express services in India

DHL today announced an investment in India of Euro 128 million, reinforcing its commitment to the growing Indian economy. The commitment is towards an acquisition of Blue Dart, the premium domestic courier and integrated air express package distribution company. DHL Express has finalised agreements with the founding shareholders of Blue Dart and Schroder Capital Partners Limited, for an acquisition of a majority stake in Blue Dart. The agreement, signed on Saturday, 6th November, gives DHL Express a 68 per cent stake in Blue Dart subject to regulatory approvals. In compliance with statutory requirements in India, the acquisition of 68 per cent of shares in Blue Dart requires DHL to make a 20 percent mandatory open offer to the public shareholders.

UPS Launches New Flights to China

UPS this week began the first of 12 new flights to China with MD-11 service to Shanghai. The new flights will triple the current service from six to 18 flights a week and comes on the heels of UPS’s impressive 129% growth in China export volume in the third quarter. “Thanks to these flights, we are moving ahead of customer demand with even greater access to the world’s fastest growing economy,” said David Abney, president, UPS International. “China is probably the most exciting business opportunity in a generation and our growth numbers from the country show that customers are turning to UPS for the efficiency and reliability of its worldwide network.”
