Transport strike, parcel service demonstration leaves Brussels in gridlock

A public transport strike and a demonstration by employees of DHL led to traffic gridlock in Brussels early Friday. Police closed of several major roads in the city during morning rush hour to accommodate the DHL demonstration, where thousands were expected to protest. With public transport unions also going on strike to demand better working conditions, thousands of people were left stranded in traffic-choked streets. The DHL workers are protesting a decision to move the courier’s international hub away from Brussels as of 2008 in a dispute over excessive noise from night flights.

DHL said leaning toward German hub

The express unit of Deutsche Post World Net reportedly has given up expansion plans at the Brussels airport and is more likely to expand in Leipzig, Germany.
DHL announced last week that the conditions set by Belgian government “regrettably do not allow DHL to create an intercontinental hub at Brussels National Airport.” For now DHL will maintain its current level of activities at the airport but plans to begin moving business to other airports in 2008. DHL will announce within two weeks whether the hub would be established in Leipzig or at Vatry in northern France, said company spokesman Xavier De Buck. Public subsidies that DHL could receive if it opted for Leipzig suggest Germany has an edge over France for the international center.

UPS Announces Rates For 2005

UPS today announced package shipping rate adjustments and a change in the fuel surcharge that will take effect on Jan 3 2005. Rates for UPS Ground, UPS Next Day Air, UPS 2nd Day Air, UPS 3 Day Select and US international services will increase 2.9 percent. UPS Hundredweight Service, an alternative to that offered by less-than-truckload carriers, will increase by 5.9 percent, producing rates still half those of most major LTL carriers. There will be no changes to most UPS retail rates offered at nearly 3,600 locations of The UPS Store. Beginning in January, UPS will reduce the fuel surcharge currently applied to UPS Next Day Air, UPS 2nd Day Air and UPS 3 Day Select and international services by setting a maximum cap of 9.5 percent.

TNT Logistics in Italy expands co-operation with Beta Utensili

Beta Utensili, a manufacturer of high quality hand tools, work wear and professional safety shoes, has signed a contract with TNT Logistics Italy. The five-year contract with Beta envisages that TNT Logistics will provide logistics for tools and small parts marketed by Beta Utensili and adds to an existing contract. The new agreement expands on the one signed in 2001. TNT Logistics will manage goods receiving, handling and storage, order preparation and dispatch throughout Italy as well as managing the administration of returns for Beta. TNT Logistics will operate a dedicated area of 11,500 m2 for the customer within its own plant at Zingonia.
