Japan Post claims tie-up with Lawson not violating antimonopoly law

Japan Post claimed at a court hearing Thursday its tie-up with convenience store operator Lawson Inc. in the parcel delivery business does not constitute dumping that violates Japan’s Antimonopoly Law. The public corporation demanded at the first hearing in a suit filed by Yamato Transport Co. that the Tokyo District Court reject the courier’s demand for a halt to the alliance between Japan Post and Lawson. Yamato filed the lawsuit against Japan Post in late September, maintaining that the state-backed entity’s parcel delivery business expansion through Lawson’s nationwide network would be “unfair” under the Antimonopoly Law as long as it receives preferential treatment in taxation and other areas.

DHL pulls international hub out of Brussels after dispute over night flights

The DHL parcel delivery service said Thursday it was pulling its intercontinental hub – and thousands of jobs – out of Belgium because authorities refused to accept an increase in noisy night flights. DHL workers immediately went on strike to protest the loss of some 1,700 jobs, instead of the thousands in additional jobs they had been promised under the company’s planned expansion of its hub in the Belgian capital. “We had a vision of making Brussels national airport the most modern and state-of-the-art hub of global logistics network. However we have now reached the point where we realize that there is no political support,” said DHL Express Europe CEO Peter Kruse. Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, however, said the talks finally broke down because DHL kept on adding “additional conditions, additional planes, more flights. Of course, they made it impossible.”

UPS reports solid 3rd quarter earnings as package business grows worldwide

UPS today reported solid third quarter growth with revenues rising 7.7% and net income increasing 20.4%. Total worldwide average daily volume increased by 445,000 packages per day to 13.7 million, a 3.4% increase. Total international export package volume grew 13.2%, while UPS Supply Chain Solutions posted strong growth with revenue up 10.1%. “The reach and reliability of our global package delivery network is unmatched and we’re attracting new business as a result,” said Scott Davis, UPS’s chief financial officer. “We’re seeing double-digit export growth in every region of the world with strong profit increases to match.”
