Sales by Baltic Logistic System Vilnius surge by 21% in 9 months

Baltic Logistic System Vilnius, the leading Lithuania’s logistic company, reported sales of 12.5 million litas (EUR 3.6 mln) for the first nine months of 2004, a surge of 21 percent from the January-to-September period of previous year. The company, which provides parcel delivery services under the trade name of Bizpak, boosted its parcel shipments by 47 percent, to 822,000 units. The performance figures for the first three quarters led to expectations that the annual rise in parcel deliveries might reach up to 50 percent, said Gintaras Bingelis, Baltic Logistic System Vilnius sales and marketing director. “A steady growth in parcel deliveries evidence that well-developed Lithuania’s small parcel market still has room to grow,” Bingelis told BNS.

American Airlines Cargo and DHL Express leverage strengths in cooperative program

American Airlines Cargo and DHL Express have agreed to increase cooperation to pursue additional opportunities in the marketplace. The new program will leverage the strengths of both companies to better serve customers in the freight and logistics industry worldwide. Highlights include the introduction of interline agreements that allow American to use DHL Express freighters to reach Eastern Europe, Africa and parts of the world not directly served by American Airlines. American also is joining DHL Express Air Carrier Management Program, further extending the traditional business relationship the companies have had over the past two decades in markets worldwide. “We’re excited about the opportunity to work with DHL Express and other members of the Deutsche Post World Net at a new level,” said Dave Brooks, President of American Airlines Cargo. “Our participation in the Air Carrier Management Program offered by DHL Express will allow us to provide added value to our customers in the shipping community by maximizing the strengths both companies bring to the industry.”

DHL noise curb won’t clinch Brussels deal

Even if global courier DHL were to limit the use of noisy planes at Brussels Airport, this would not be enough to reach a deal on its planned expansion, a key regional Belgian minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday. DHL’s plans to increase flights at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport hit new obstacles earlier this month when squabbling national and regional governments closed ranks to demand that the company reduce the use of noisy intercontinental planes. “Even if DHL were to say today that it would be prepared to limit itself to four noisy MD-11 (planes) per night… the case will not yet be solved,” Yves Leterme, the prime minister of the northern Dutch-speaking Flanders region, told the daily Metro in an interview.

Orkney and Shetland Islands’ MP demands action on parcel charges

Opening up parcel deliveries to competition has been a disaster for the people in remote communities who rely most heavily on them, a Liberal Democrat MP complained today. Alistair Carmichael, who represents Orkney and Shetland, called for Government action to protect the islanders from inflated charges for often almost non-existent services. And he warned that any moves to privatise the Post Office’s letter delivery service would create further problems and force more people to move to overcrowded urban areas. Party colleague Alan Reid (Argyll and Bute) said it was unacceptable that state-owned Parcelforce charged islanders twice the usual rate for a service that was a day slower. He called for the firm to be made subject to the same universal service obligation as Royal Mail.
