Unions demonstrate at Brussels airport over night flight dispute

Unions demonstrated at Brussels international airport and delayed some flights Friday to push their demands for a deal between the authorities and parcel service DHL that would keep thousands of jobs in Belgium.

Airport workers have been outraged that an agreement has stalled for weeks over how to balance DHL’s demands for more night flights with local residents’ concerns over noise.

“We limited our action because we did not want to pester the passengers,” said union representative Hendrik Vermeersch. “We wanted to give the authorities and DHL a signal that enough is enough. We need a deal now.”

Several hundred workers assembled in the departure hall for a short demonstration, which affected a few flights. Employees of other companies at the airport joined in.

DHL Zimbabwe receives award

DHL has nominated its Zimbabwean network, Country of the Year for 2004, ranking it the best of its offices in southern Africa.

The company rates Zimbabwe as the fourth best emerging market country in the world.

The award involves all 47 countries in Africa in which DHL operates.

DHL operations manager Mr Michael Druce based in Johannesburg, South Africa congratulated the DHL staff in Zimbabwe for the “tremendous result”.

“It is truly remarkable when one considers the environment in which they operate,” Mr Druce said.

Belgian PM writes to DHL to demand fleet upgrade at Brussels airport

Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt has written to express courier company DHL to demand assurances that its air fleet will be modernised if it extends its activities at Brussels airport, Belgian daily Le Soir newspaper reported, citing the prime minister.

Talks between Belgian authorities and DHL over the expansion of Brussels Zaventum airport into DHL’s regional hub have stalled over the disturbance to local residents caused by an increase in night flights.

The main stumbling block, which the federal government hopes is the key to a settlement, is the modernisation of DHL’s fleet of planes to ensure quieter models are used when landing after-dark, Le Soir said.

UPS bets logistics business will be growth engine

United Parcel Service Inc. is betting its logistics group will be a major growth engine as it benefits from companies expanding abroad.

The company, known for its brown uniforms and trucks, has been expanding beyond its package delivery roots into logistics, using its network to help shippers navigate customs, manage traffic flows, reduce inventory to free up cash, warehouse parts and revamp distribution networks.

“More customers are global or global sourcing,” said Bob Stoffel, senior vice president of UPS Supply Chain Group, at a recent press briefing. “They want someone to manage it (the traffic).”

The company’s logistics business, which has grown to USD2.1 billion, or about 6 percent of total UPS revenue, is one of three prongs in the UPS growth strategy, Chief Executive Michael Eskew said at the briefing.
