Belgian PM stays off work as political crisis simmers

Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt cancelled Friday a planned return to work after being injured in a car crash, keeping on hold a simmering political crisis threatening his government.

He had planned to resume work Friday to discuss a crisis over threats by global shipping company DHL, a major local employer, to pull out of Brussels airport due to restrictions on night flights.

But his spokesman said Verhofstadt would not be chairing a cabinet meeting as expected, and would be taking several more days to rest.

“He is still in too much pain and so will not be able to chair” the ministerial meetings, the spokesman was cited by the Belga news agency as saying, adding Verhofstadt had had a “very bad night.”

Back in the black; Amtrak set to buy

Amtrak Express Parcels is set to go on the acquisition trail after returning to profitability in 2004. Its pre-tax profit was (pounds sterling)1.9m against a loss of (pounds sterling)5.5m in 2003. Iain MacRitchie, non-executive chairman, says: “This is an excellent result which has come much earlier than we had anticipated. The performance, competitive advantages and strength of our balance sheet have now provided a strong foundation on which to accelerate and we can now actively participate in the required consolidations of the parcel sector.” The firm, which is 68% owned by 3i, achieved a 4% growth in turnover to (pounds sterling)70m and achieved a (pounds sterling)6m operating profit. Revenue rose 4% to (pounds sterling)69.7m – its highest level in four years. It also revealed it had cut costs by 25% after restructuring its operation in 2002.

Italy TNT Global Express Appoints Massimo Silvetti CEO

TNT Global Express, the Italian unit of Dutch mail, express and logistics services provider TPG NV, appointed Massimo Silvetti its new CEO, it was reported on September 23, 2004. Silvetti was nominated by the management board of TPG. TNT Global Express registered a turnover of some 500 mln euro (USD613.9 mln) in 2003. The company employs some 8, 000 people. TNT Global Express has 135 offices in Italy, 3, 400 trucks and six aircraft. The company transports an average of over 140, 000 deliveries daily.

Indonesian domestic courier industry needs fair regulation

The local courier industry has enjoyed rapid growth over the past several years thanks to a significant growth in economic activities in the country’s provinces outside Java.

The association of the Indonesian delivery companies (Asperindo), however, said that the lack of a sound regulations could hamper the local courier companies’ future growth.

According to the association, Law No. 6/1984 which regulates courier service providers’ activities in the country was no longer appropriate in the globalised business world.

“We certainly need a more modern, visionary regulations so that we will have a level playing field in conducting our business,” the association’s chairman, Johari Zain, said.

Courier giants upbeat in Indonesian market

The world’s major express and logistics companies remain confident about the long-term prospects of the Indonesian courier market despite uncertainties in the country’s foreign trade.

Big players such as DHL, Fedex, TNT and RPX believe the long-term prospects for the Indonesian courier market remain bright, although many problems still hamper Indonesia’s international trade.

“There have definitely been improvements in the business, especially in the area of heavyweight shipments,” Edi Parayitno, the communications and e-commerce manager of DHL Express in Indonesia. Edi said that DHL Express, which operates through its Indonesian partner, PT Birotika Semesta, had recently launched an air service between Jakarta and Singapore in response to the high volume of inbound and outbound shipments
