DHL to pull out of Brussels

DHL Worldwide is preparing to take part of its business out of Brussels Zaventem Airport as it is no longer prepared to wait for the country to agree to DHL’s plans to expand, a Belgian paper said on Tuesday. DHL, a unit of Deutsche Post, wanted to expand at Zaventem but needs the green light from the country’s different regions to allow it to increase the number of night flights so the business can grow. Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad quoted “high-placed” sources at DHL as saying DHL would keep its headquarters and its courier service in Zaventem, near the Brussels capital, but that the airport would lose out on an expansion of DHL’s European sorting center.

FedEx Corp finishes USD120 million acquisition of Parcel Direct

FedEx Corp has completed its USD120 million acquisition of Parcel Direct from Quad/Graphics, the company announced. The move marks FedEx’s entry into the emerging parcel consolidation market.
FedEx said it now will be able to deliver low-weight, less time-sensitive goods to residential customers. Parcel Direct will operate as a subsidiary of FedEx Ground and will target customers in the e-tail and catalog industries. It will be led by Ward Strang, a 16-year veteran of FedEx Ground who was instrumental in the growth of the company’s residential ground service, FedEx Home Delivery.

Strang will direct all operations for the 12 distribution hubs and 450 employees from Parcel Direct headquarters.

Deutsche Post agrees with Ver.di on plans to integrate DHL

Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, has reached an agreement with Ver.di, the trade union for the service sector in Germany, regarding the integration of its logistics subsidiary DHL into Deutsche Post World Net.

It is not yet clear how many jobs will be lost as a result of the plan; according to earlier reports, 1,600 of the 10,000 jobs at the company in Germany could be affected. Neither Deutsche Post nor Ver.di has confirmed these figures.

UK DHL appoints new manager to oversee international mail expansion

DHL Express has appointed Tim Patey as Product Manager for its international mail product, named Globalmail Business. Tim Patey has been with DHL since 2000 and previously worked within DHL Sales looking after a major accounts within Central London. He will be based at the DHL Express Head Office in Hounslow, reporting into Group Product Manager, Mark Peacock. A key focus for Tim Patey’s role will be to extend DHL’s international mail offering to existing and prospective international and domestic express services customers.

TNT opens multi-million pound flagship depot in Birmingham UK

TNT is opening a new GBP8.2 million purpose built facility in Birmingham later this month – the biggest in the company’s nationwide network of more than 50 depots. Handling tens of thousands of parcels and packages each week, the state-of-the-art depot at Network Park, Saltley, provides a vital strategic link for the delivery and collection of business-to-business consignments for industry and commerce in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Employing 300 people, the depot represents the largest ever investment in a single site by TNT Express Services in the UK. The new 68-door loading bay means more than five-dozen vehicles can be either delivering or collecting packages at the same time.
