FedEx completes acquisition of Parcel Direct

FedEx Corporation today announced it has completed the USD120 million acquisition of leading national parcel consolidator Parcel Direct from Quad/Graphics. With this acquisition, FedEx adds to its range of distinct, yet complementary, residential services, including FedEx Express and FedEx Home Delivery. Parcel Direct extends the unequalled FedEx portfolio to customers in the fast-growing e-tail and catalog industries who are looking for a cost-effective means of shipping low-weight, less-time-sensitive goods. “This acquisition adds another proven solution to our portfolio and offers customers even greater choice for residential shipping,” said Daniel J. Sullivan, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Ground. “I’m confident that we can build on the successful operating model put in place by Parcel Direct to quickly meet increasing customer demand.”

A Chinese ‘takeaway’ – US-China freighter rights

The US-China freighter rights allocation just announced by the US Department of Transportation unfairly favours express operators, Northwest Airlines claimed last week. NWA Cargo, which currently flies three freighters a week into Shanghai, told IFW it was disappointed its allocation ignored the greater needs of the heavy cargo market. The DoT proposed allocating FedEx and UPS six weekly freighter flights each and a further six from March 2005. These would be in addition to the 11 and six respectively the two currently operate. NWA Cargo was offered three this year and three next. “NWA Cargo will continue to have substantially fewer frequencies than FedEx and UPS, despite the fact that the predominant demand in the US China market is heavy freight, ” the company said.
It declined to speculate on why the US government had favoured express operators, although FedEx and UPS are known to have a strong lobbying influence in Washington.

FedEx moves local Asian markets to region-wide loyalty plan

International courier company FedEx is rolling out a new regionwide online loyalty programme to encourage closer relationships with its small- and medium-sized customers. The programme will replace local loyalty schemes which currently operate differently in national markets. “With a consolidated programme, there is a common brand identity, which will have a greater impact and awareness among customers,” commented Malcolm Sullivan, VP of marketing and communications for FedEx’s Asia Pacific division. The FedEx Reward Centre Programme is currently being piloted in Singapore, China and Japan prior to rollout over an unspecified period across Asia-Pacific. The scheme’s online platform will also make it cheaper to run than existing programmes, Sullivan said, with savings from bulk purchases and sharing capital equipment and operations.
