Spanish Azkar Opens Distribution Centre in Burgos

Spanish transport and distribution company Transportes Azkar SA, Azcar, opened a distribution centre in Burgos, northern Spain, the company said on September 8, 2004.

The distribution centre has an area of 2,400 sq m and is part of the city transports centre.

The opening of the centre is aimed to strengthen the positions of the company in Castille Leon. Azkar operates a network of six distribution centres in the region and a logistics platform, located in Valladolid. Currently existing centres total an area of 16,000 sq m.

Deutsche Post reaches agreement to purchase DHL Iberia

Deutsche Post has reached an agreement with the minority shareholders of DHL Iberia to purchase all of the company’s outstanding shares, the German express delivery and logistics provider said in a statement Thursday. In early 2003, Deustche Post decided to incorporate into DHL Iberia its Spanish acquisitions (Guipuzcoana Euroexpress, Danzas and DHL) in a process expected to conclude next year. The latest agreement will allow the German giant to acquire the remaining stake in DHL Iberia in a deal that could be finalized by year-end.

DHL Express Thailand foresees 20 percent growth this year

DHL Express (Thailand) Co Ltd expects to post 20-per-cent revenue growth this year as it expands its services to keep pace with the rapid growth of trade in Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region, managing director Herbert Vongpusanachai said. The company will increase its payload capacity for express service between Thailand and the region and plans to upgrade air express facilities, such as its distribution centres in Thailand, to handle more shipments. DHL Thailand is also continuing with various marketing activities aimed at all target markets.

‘The outlook for the express business is optimistic, with an expected revenue increase of 20 per cent, as earlier targeted,’ said Herbert.

Foreign express giants speed up expansion in China

International express magnates such as UPS, TNT, DHL and FedEx are speeding up to further explore the Chinese market as China opens up its domestic express business on December 18 of 2005.

United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) currently runs six cargo flights from the United States to China a week. If winning approval from the US administration, UPS will be in a position to fly six new flights to Shanghai immediately and six new ones to Guangzhou next year. The new flights will allow UPS to connect Shanghai with Japan for the first time with non-stop service, and the 2005 flights will allow UPS to offer non-stop service from the U.S. to Guangzhou for the first time.
