UPS Expands Real-World Testing of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology

Buoyed by initial road-test results and significant technological advancements, UPS today announced the U.S. deployment of its first three large package delivery vehicles utilizing hydrogen fuel cells for power. “Shifting away from a fossil fuel based economy to a hydrogen economy would be a great environmental and technological achievement,” said Chris Mahoney, UPS senior vice president of global transportation services. “UPS now is jumping from a small fuel cell car to a medium-duty truck. We will continue the rapid application of this technology in hopes that in the near future, we can deploy zero-emission engines across our fleet of 88,000 vehicles.”

Express giants see value in new Chinese Guangzhou base

The new airport in Guangzhou has made the city more attractive for air express companies to make it their hub, although none has done so yet.

Air express company FedEx Express signed a Framework Agreement with the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Company in December with the intention of making it its Asia Pacific hub, but the plan was changed when the Philippines made concessions to keep FedEx in the country, including giving the American company “seventh freedom” rights, which allows a carrier to fly to other destinations from a hub without first passing its home base.

FedEx Express president, Asia Pacific, David Cunningham said the company was still considering how best to expand its hub operations in Asia.

Now China Post is fighting back with a new all-night freight service between 136 cities in 27 provinces.

US FedEx flies even higher

Given all the dark clouds hanging over the economy, FedEx’s news couldn’t have come at a better time. On Aug. 23, the shipping giant raised its profit forecast for both its fiscal first quarter and full year, and it said it would boost capital spending.
The bullish report from FedEx comes at a time when concerns are growing as to whether surging oil prices will precipitate a pullback in spending by both consumers and businesses. But FedEx — which, like other transportation companies, is entering its busiest months as retailers begin building inventories for the upcoming holiday season — says it doesn’t foresee a slowdown.
“We’re seeing strong demand across our international express, ground, and less-than-truckload services,” Alan B. Graf Jr., FedEx’s chief financial officer, said in a statement.
