DHL Brussel’s decision due by end of year

DHL expects to decide on the future of its main European air hub in Brussels, Belgium, by the end of this year, senior executives have confirmed.

The German-owned global logistics player is concerned that continuing environmentalist and political pressures to restrict night-time flying at Brussels Airport would limit the company’s ability to further expand its own operations there.

German airport Leipzig hopes to be used as base by DHL

Leipzig-Halle airport, Germany, is hoping that it will be chosen as a base by DHL, the subsidiary of German postal service operator Deutsche Post that specialises in express deliveries and logistics. DHL is currently based in Brussels, but says that it will be able to deal with the increasing volume of deliveries only if the airport there is extended and remains in operation during the night. However, there is opposition to these plans.

CashFlowNews.com reports that EBITDA for FedEx Corporation for its quarter ended May 31, 2004 was USD1,042,000,000, a 27percent increase over the year earlier same quarter when FedEx generated USD822,000,000 in EBITDA. FedEx has generated thirty-four consecutive quarters of positive EBITDA. EBITDA for the most recent quarter also reached a eight year high.

UPS aims to set up first US carrier hub in China

United Parcel Service Inc, which has seen double digit growth in China in the past three years, is aiming to become the first US airline to set up a hub on the mainland.

A landmark aviation deal set to be signed by the US and China tomorrow will allow US carriers to establish hubs in China provided they meet certain requirements, including 72 weekly flight movements in and out of the country.

Union says UPS is too optimistic on talks

The labour union representing United Parcel Service’s 2,500 pilots on Thursday said the world’s largest package carrier had been “overly optimistic” about resolving a long-running contract dispute and that a near-term resolution was not in sight.

Last month, UPS and the Independent Pilots Association announced they would seek a federal mediator after nearly two years of talks had failed to produce an agreement.
