The Peruvian air courier service market may increase by 10percent this year with the higher demand for package services (samples) due to the next free trade agreements (Mercosur and US), according to TNT International Express. The courier sector involves two specific products: papers (documents, CDS, diskettes) and packages or samples (finished products with value added).

USPS statement on agreement with GLS

In January 2002, the United States Postal Service announced an agreement with Royal Mail to use their pan European delivery network to deliver Global Express Mail and Air Parcel Post to 23 countries. This agreement formally expires on December 31, 2004 and the Postal Service and Royal Mail have mutually agreed to let the contract expire on that date. The Postal Service will revert to the individual Foreign Postal Administration for delivery of these two products in each country that Royal Mail’s subsidiary, GLS, served effective January 1, while GLS will continue to focus on its core product: Business to Business deliveries utilizing commercial customs clearance.

Pinsents delivers deal for vendors in GBP89m Nightfreight SBO

A specialist legal team from Pinsents has advised the selling shareholders of Nightfreight Group, the UK’s leading overnight carrier for non-standard freight of irregular weight and dimension (IDW) on the GBP89 million secondary buyout of the company. The deal is backed by The Royal Bank of Scotland Debt Ventures, which has invested pounds sterling 77 million. The balance of the funding has come from the selling shareholders, Barclays Private Equity (BPE) and Nightfreight management. Management will hold almost 50% of the new company.

New research confirms Belgium’s position as the European gateway to the international parcels and express marketplace

A new study from Andrew Lester & Associates’ PacTrac © research programme covering the Belgian parcels and packages market reinforces the picture of Belgium’s role as a transit and distribution centre for other EU member countries. In economic terms export sales account for more than 80% of Belgium’s GDP, which is one of the highest percentages amongst industrialised economies.

The PacTrac © study findings are based on 750 interviews with a cross-section of international parcels and express service users in Belgium and Luxembourg conducted in two phases between June 2003 and March 2004. Initial estimates put the total market size for international parcels and packages at 4m items per month.

UK Royal Mails size-based pricing proposal still causing concern

Royal Mail’s size-based pricing proposal is continuing to cause concern for the magazine and direct mail industry with differences over the issue of uniformity.

The PPA and Royal Mail are set to meet and reach a compromise over the proposal that items 10mm-thick could be classified as packages rather than large letters, depending on a tolerance level of 2mm.
